Questions: Comparable to UK salary and Pregnancy

Hello everybody,

I hope you can help me in answering my questions. I have looked around a bit already but don't really find the answer.

My first question is if anybody know what a 75k GBP salary in London is comparable to, when you live and work in Zurich. The exact amount is around 160k chf but I guess the equivalent will be a little less?

My husband and me will be moving to zurich in the future. Now I am 3 months pregnant and was wondering if anybody knows what I should be doing when we get there. What kind of health insurance do we need? I was supposed to give birth in the UK under the NHS, but do we need special insurance? Do I need to register somewhere very quickly or do we have loads of time.

Any help on this is very much appreciated. Thanks!

Re: Questions: Comparable to UK salary and Pregnancy

Hi,

A quick & dirty bit of maths suggests:
  • 75K GBP nets down to 49,923 assuming full tax code in 07-08
  • CHF 160K nets down to 128,600,
    • Note: I made lots of assumptions about religion (taxable!), children, where you live & so on - all of these factors impact Swiss salary deductions
  • So the good news is your 160K Swiss makes you better off by 10,094 GBP after tax :-) . That's like getting a 16,800 pay rise in Blighty.
Remember that the cost of living here can be higher. Insurances are mandatory, and not particularly cheap, for example. There are lots of threads here on EF about the relative cost of living UK <-> CH

If anyone else knows the system better, please feel free to correct me!

Hope this helps,

JC

Hi Jerome, thanks very much for that.

Is cost of living in Zurich really higher than in London, assuming centre of London? So far I have been told that it is a littlebit less....

Re: Questions: Comparable to UK salary and Pregnancy

Hi,

Actually I dont think I meant what you think I meant, sorry. Your calculation is based on the tax rate correct? What I mean to ask is really if you make 75k GBP and you live in London to what amount of CHF can you compare that, when you live in Zurich.

For example 75k GBP in London compares to about 80k EUR in Amsterdam I think. As in terms of living standard, regardless of tax.

Thanks.

Re: Questions: Comparable to UK salary and Pregnancy

Hi I think cost of living is less in Zurich , London is one of the most expensive cities in the world, certainly the Tax is significantly lower. I guess 140 kCHF would take you equal lengths.

If you live in Switzerland you have to take up mandatory health insurance and then you can give birth in any hospital of your choice (I reccommend Zollikerberg, where our two children were born)

Health service is very good her, my wife is English and she thinks it beats the NHS by miles!

Kind regards

Christian

Hi,

Christian that is very helpful and what I wanted to know, thanks! Zollikerberg, is that in Zurich? Good to know the standard is better than the NHS as well .

Re: Questions: Comparable to UK salary and Pregnancy

Hi

Zollikerberg is just outside Zurich, maybe 10-165 minutes by car or train. You pobably won't be living in the city center anyway, there are nicer areas on the lake shore for example.

Cheers
