WAC in Uster - views and reviews?

Hi all,
My husband is getting relocated with work in ZH, date to be confirmed, but it should be around March 2014.
We have a 19 months old who in March will turn 2 and we are considering Uster as a place to live because of many reasons (Greifensee, affordable housing, well connected to his workplace) ...and one of them is the WAC.
We are italians but we have lived in London for the past 7 years and the area where we live here is FULL of playgroups (the council has a magazine which lists all the local activities and there is an average of 5/10 groups per day in the area)...so I am spoilt for choice in terms of things to do with my little girl during the day.
What I have found is the WAC and that seems great in terms of all the activities they have and the fact that the Wackersmthing group will help her to learn Swiss German and also all the activities they have in English (which I would like her still to keep as a language...she is like a language learning sponge so the more the merrier :-) )
I just want to find out from other mums who use the WAC how good their activities are and whether it is worth moving to Uster also because of that.
I guess once we have moved I could go and check it out but I just want to understand if it's good as it seems to be and get some experiences/views etc.
Thanks a lot guys! (well, mainly girls...or better mums :-))

Re: WAC in Uster - views and reviews?

When my daughter was two and very soon after we arrived in Switzerland, I used to get the train from the city to Uster (10 minutes from Stadelhofen station) with my daughter a few times a week so she could go to the WAC. She attended the morning preschool there for a year or so, and I went to German lessons while she was in childcare organised by the WAC.

I can't comment on the playgroups as we didn't go to any, except to say that everyone I spoke to thought they were great. I was very impressed with the preschool but we stopped going once we moved a bit further away and also because I wanted my daughter to start learning Swiss German.

But I made some great friends there with whom I'm still friends today (my daughter is now 8 and in the local school here in Meilen). The WAC is a very friendly place and they organise lots of social things for the grown-ups and kids. It was a great support for me when I was new to the country.

It's run by its members, with only a few paid staff members, so you would definitely be encouraged to get involved if you were interested.

On the other hand, we didn't consider moving to Uster just to be closer. At the time we lived in the centre of Zurich, which was fantastic, and we now live further down the lake in Meilen, which is really great for kids. I know some people here in Meilen who take their kids to after school activities at the WAC, so if you don't mind driving you can still access everything they have to offer from outside of Uster.

Your daughter will very soon grow up and be too old for the playgroups etc., and while the WAC offers lots of after-school classes, too, I think you are better off looking at the whole package of Uster: shops, schools, transport etc etc. before you make your decision.

Re: WAC in Uster - views and reviews?

I am very happy to have seen your quest (by chance actually). I joined the WAC less than a year ago, my 2.5 year old goes to preschool, and I take my ten months old to playgroup there. We live in uster. And I also work at the WAC by the way!

I really love the WAC for all the opporunities that exist for my kids and myself. I have made so many friends, and it has helped me feel 'at home' in uster. I also enjoy living in uster very much. We lived in zurich before, but uster is a much better choice for children. The town itself has everything you might need, and I only seldom go to zurich for shopping or restaurant etc...

The WAC has two playgroups for the age of your daughter, and the preschool is for ages 2 and above (all in English). We have swimming and music. The playgroup you mentioned is also great for the integration into the Swiss society. For moms (and also dads sometimes) we have regular activities but also special events, like potluck dinners, cooking classes etc...we also have a library with a great choice of books and movies for adults and kids.

I could write two more pages...but to keep it short go for uster, you won't regret it! Hope to meet you soon there, I'll send you my private email by pm if you need any help. Also you can visit our Facebook page: the WAC.

Good luck!
