What Happens When You Are Nice To Your Neighbours

Their kids shovel your driveway without being asked and without any compensation.

We have moved and the house is empty before the new owners move in.

If we had not seen it for ourselves we would never have believed it.

Re: What Happens When You Are Nice To Your Neighbours

We've always had brilliant neighbours- both in UK and here. It's amazing

Just before we moved here, having bought the house 1 year before, a large part of the roof was ripped by a massive snow slip- neighbours got together with tractors and shovels, and cleared the tons of snow and debris- they called the roofers, who came immediately and secured the roof- and by the time we arrived, it was all done and repaired. Just one example of so many

They just needed the exercise - I just waited for the snow to melt.

Re: What Happens When You Are Nice To Your Neighbours

Our neighbors are amazing. My landlady puts little American flags in the boxwood on the front stoop on July 4th, just for us.

My across-the -street neighbor lets me know when I have left the lights on on my car.

Seriously, I feel really bad for the other people on this forum who have lousy neighbors.

We exchange gifts at Christmas with our neighbors and all is well here in Lausanne. I wish every ex-pat could have our same experience because the "complaints thread" would be much shorter.

Whilst we were away in July for two weeks our neighbour watered our lawn/flowers before going to work in the morning and the evening. We did not even ask her, such an angel.

Bet they didn't pay the bill though.

We have really nice neighbours too, all very helpful and friendly.

I take the opportunity to thank my nice neighbours, as well - for cooking for me, inviting me to parties, cinema etc.

And yet you haven't moved yet.... why oh why? I have tons of sympathy for you, but comes a time, if you live next to a dangerous nutter... that moving becomes the only option to protect your family.

Re: What Happens When You Are Nice To Your Neighbours

We have great neighbors. No do gooders unlike where we used to live.

We have a get-together BBQ every summer and if neighbors are away during hot weather plants always get watered.

I suspect most complaints stems from the ignorance of not knowing the swiss culture.

He is still in "treatment" in a secure unit and his flat is for sale...perhaps we were right to wait and fight for justice and protection.

Re: What Happens When You Are Nice To Your Neighbours

My (now ex) neighbours used to let the cat in and ring my doorbell. He did have a ladder, but got a bit lazy. Hey, why use the ladder when all these nice people persons open doors for me....

They had impromptu drinky and music sessions for everyone, and used to throw things at my window to get me out there.

I miss my neighbours.

I also was nice to them, with a little card or chocolate in their letterboxes. And munchie bits for the evenings outside.

Re: What Happens When You Are Nice To Your Neighbours

What a coincidence that I just stumbled upon this thread...

We're quite friendly with our Swiss neighbors, who live above us. However, it's never really evolved beyond just a "hello" and brief exchange of words when passing by, though their kids have been really sweet to come and feed my cat when we're on holiday.

So just tonight, the man from upstairs knocked on our door and then asked if he could borrow 350 CHF from us -- to book a weekend trip online -- because they had maxed out their credit card.

My husband (somewhat) reluctantly did lend him the money. But I'm a bit in shock. I just couldn't imagine going to one of my neighbors and asking to borrow such a sum of money! (Especially considering the fact that they already owe us 50 CHF since the beginning of October).
