Re: The First World Problem Thread

Drove to Zug to help a guy take the front suspension of his Jaguar. 7 hours later on my way home I thought "I'll have a beer, or a glass of wine with dinner." Stopped at Affoltern a. A. No alcoholic beveridges there, at all. Got back on the highway, slightly miffed at having forgotten that there are no alcoholic beveridges there, I wasn't thinking at the split and inadvertently took the city route, and spent an additional 30 minutes at Brunau singing Harry Chapin and trying to pretend I am not a complete idiot. Stopped at the Gas station in Eglisau, about 45 minutes later than I should have been enjoying a beer and got three.

Now all I need to do is figure out how I can borrow, make, or fake the special tool we need to get the torsion bars out of a SIII XKE.

Re: The First World Problem Thread

I can see two possible good scoring 5 letter german words on my scrabble game, but no high scoring english word.

Why there no bilingual scrabble?

That's awoken one of my major pain points since arriving here.

I have the English Scrabble, and the German Scrabble. Both now up in the attic because they are not Swiss German.

Forget it - it's bad enough to decide on the rules like no slang words, no text speak, etc. etc. let alone to start allowing polyglot rules.

Besides, if it were a EN/FR bilingual game, all the e tiles would be gone far too soon! (They'd also need to be worth zero, because there's really no point - pun intended).

Don't put heels on.

Teaching for real is great. Golden rule - if students have fun, it is great. If students and you have fun, it's even better.

SBB just announced that it will close all of its 1st class lounges by end of 2016 to save 3M CHF. What a shame, will they lower 1st class GA subscription price, I bet not!

You'd be lucky if the price remained the same, viz. it didn't go up!

What were the lounges like on the inside? Any good?

I don't think you'll have to worry about SBP teaching in heels.

SBP - Where will you be teaching? Uni?

Re: The First World Problem Thread

I sometime use the one in Zurich and it's good (check SBB website for inside pictures) and is usually busy so I don't know why SBB is saying it is underused.

They only serve hot and cold drinks, but would've been great if they served some snacks.

I know many people who purchase GA they do take the access to 1st class lounge into consideration as a deciding factor between 1st and 2nd class GA.

The problem is that they don't have these lounges dotted in the major stations such as Basel, Bern. It's surprising they've done a "U" turn as they were planning on opening one in Basel and the reason for them closing is very pathetic I.e not many passengers use them?

Re: The First World Problem Thread

They could use the 3M CHF saved by allowing access to all the Swiss Airport lounges as that would be very useful and cheaper than spending 3M CHF per year. If "Diners Club" allow this facility them I'm sure SBB can easily do it.

Are the lounges so busy that:
  • There is usually no sitting room?
  • The sitting room that is left is so inaccessible that it's not worth sitting down? For example, not enough room to manoeuvre, no power points to use...
  • There's no peace and quiet?
  • The drinks don't get replenished fast enough, or all the "good" drinks are gone?
  • It just might be better to wait or sit outside the lounge, e.g. in a cafe/restaurant, or even on the platform (particularly if travelling on the company's account)?

SBB might have well sent out a survey and asked people do you use the SBB lounge. Those that said "no" may include those that may not use the lounge for any of the reasons above (if any of them hold relatively true). It may also include lots of those who do not reside in Zurich and thus have no SBB lounge in their home stations, and may rarely use the one in Zurich, if at all (and I believe there may be one in Geneva as well).

Many companies - airlines, I know well - will make a service worse or do not much about it, then when the use of that service goes down, they "successfully" argue that the service isn't needed any more because no one uses it. Of course, as you point out, withdrawal of that service which costs them money doesn't usually lead to a drop (or maintaining the same level) in prices.

The only hope is that they reinvest the "saved" money into some sort of tangible capital project.

If you are in the unfortunate situation of not having a Flake bar, yes - both.
