Re: The First World Problem Thread

You are in a parking garage and you've been circling for minutes to find a spot. Then you see it...there at the end of the driveway. Excited you push on the accelerator fearing that a rival will nick it. You're almost there reaching the holly grail......only to realize at the last second that a SMART car is already on the spot.

Damn! I hate those SMART cars and their drivers.

Little Jobs body prick at the post office won't accept my drivers license as valid ID. No idea what the rules officially say but I've absolutely never had a problem with that before.
Little git probably votes for far right parties.

From my experience, it's a fairly standard rule in Switzerland that the driver's license isn't a valid form of ID.

Interestingly, when I was in Canada and asked for ID while buying a beer, the official Swiss ID and Swiss passport was not acceptable. I had to show them my Swiss driver's license in order to get a pint.

If it's a swiss one I think it's official Post policy that they accept it. At any rate I have no problems picking up registered mail using my drivers license. Usually a foreing issued document other than a passport will be no use in CH

Re: The First World Problem Thread

During the depositing of cash in other bank's ATM, the machine retained my card. I was supposed to be sent it free of charge after the talk with CS manager but they deducted CHF20 from my account. On the top of that I was sent two new cards instead of one. Hence this extra charge incurred. Now I wrote them email and wait for reply ... Can the CS admin get it ever right?

It is really difficult to find a bank that will allow deposits of large amounts of undeclared and of dubious origin cash.

There is a congress going on right now in Zurich with specialists in this field. Perhaps ask there?

Although over time the visits back to the UK come more and more to remind you that it's not "home" any more, and how glad you are of that.

Sad because you can never really enjoy and integrate somewhere if you cling to your old persona and country.
But as you posted the country you remember has slowly gone away and changed into something else. We always remember the warm summers and fun days of our youth but our memory is usually very selective and you cannot go back to what is no longer there.

Then you can be marooned in No-Mans land between a country you never fully accepted and another country that no longer exists as you remember it.

I can share this feeling.

I don't really feel fully at home in the Uk any more. Too much has changed and the problems that there used to be seem to have got worse and more opressive whereas the good stuff is still there but feels more like a holiday thing than something I'm really part of.

I wouldn't say I don't feel accepted in CH as my Swiss friends do accept me as one of theirs, and I've often caught myself saying "we" when talking about CH, and my expat friends consider me the resident CH expert and ask me to explain loads of stuff to them. But its more the inside feeling that deep inside I know I'm not really part of it. I'm not really part of anything. I'm just me.

Speak for yourself!

I'll always be British, whether I like it or not, and even if I ever become Swiss as well, but I've never found problems integrating or enjoying my adopted place(s) of residence.

Anyway, I don't equate "in your heart you're still British" with "clinging" to anything.
