I was planning to spend the week I booked off in October flying my model airplanes, playing PS4 and catching-up on House MD whilst eating Häagen-Dazs in my underpants............ However my missus wants us to go to Istanbul instead

Well, you can fly a real airplane to Istanbul, catch up on House MD in spare time on board or at night...

...as for eating Haagen-Dazs in your underpants, well, you could probably do that too if the missus will let you so in Istanbul (I assume it is possible to get Haagen-Dazs somewhere...)

Might be getting violent on the streets of Istanbul in October, police were out with their water cannons again yesterday, link. http://www.todayszaman.com/anasayfa_...od_394653.html

Re: The First World Problem Thread

The pool nearest to us offers swimming classes for kids. There is the fee for the class - normal, but one must also pay an entrance ticket for them PLUS for the person who brings them to class (young kids). On top of it, the parents must change into bathing suits, too, even when the pool is closed to them. Switzerlanded?

A CHF 1000 note is both useful and useless at the same time.

How so? I've used 1000 notes to pay for very small items, e.g. my morning sandwich and bag of fruit from the local Co-op. Have you ever been unable to use one?

In Switzerland you need several 1000 chuff notes for anything.

You know, with all the cashiers making 250K and all that.

It's much cheaper to shop across the border in Germany. You can buy several carts full of the most expensive stuff and still get change out of a single Euro coin.

  • I pay most of my groceries using credit card (to put towards the cash back amount, albeit small), so I don't end up using that note.
  • Using it to pay for coffee or cake at the boulangerie or at work and it won't be accepted.
Even if merchants could break a CHF 1000 note, they will scowl at you very hard in doing so.

I guess if anything it looks cool and if you had to move that much cash, it'd work swell as long as the person at the other end is prepared to accept those notes.

From a practical standpoint, it is virtually useless.

Really? At ours kids pay only from 6yo, and parents can drink coffee (with clothes on) while watching them having their lessons.

However my 4yo had her first lesson this morning: she got water in the nose, forgot to close her mouth and swallowed/inhaled water. Consequently she ran out of the pool crying, and point blank refuses to go back for her next lessons....

I ordered a salad. When the waiter asked whether I wanted French or Italian dressing i said Italian although I prefer French. The waiter spoke with an Italain accent and I didn't want him to feel offended.

How long can you leave sushi in a draw at work before it's no longer good to eat?

Bollocks.

I actually did an experiment once, all in the name of science.

I brought the mortal remains of a fish we had eaten over the weekend to work. This included lost of uneaten bits including the head.

I hid it in the ventilation duct of the HR department, waiting to see how long until the smell would become unbearable.

In fact I never ever heard of it again.

So either the fish was mummified wher it lay, or somebody managed to retrieve it. But judgingby the technical abilities of HR people, I'm assuming the former.

I miss the interlibrary loans. Free service, too! Ch is a first country, but in the library business, it can sure do better.
