Fuel prices have gone down but I can't take advantage because my car is so fuel efficient that it's taking forever for my current tank to finish
Following on from this I finally managed to fuel up on Thursday at my local ASDA for 107.9!

Re: The First World Problem Thread

Was coming back from Strasbourg yesterday to Lausanne. This necessitates a SNCF trip to Basel, then SBB/CFF from there (either direct or via Biel/Bienne, Bern or Olten).

Now, you can buy a whole connected ticket in one fell swoop; basically it combines the cost of the local SNCF train plus a regular SBB/CFF train. To save about CHF 10, I thought I'd be smart and buy the tickets separately - the SNCF one at Gare de Strasbourg, and the SBB/CFF one on my app - because with the SBB/CFF there were Supersaver tickets available. It also worked better for me as I didn't have access to a printer to print out the whole international ticket. Pretty neat, eh?

I left myself a connection time of about 25 minutes or so, which I thought should be plenty between trains at Basel SBB. Then our SNCF train was delayed down the line, with a net delay on arrival at Basel SBB of - you guessed it - 25 minutes. Missed my SBB/CFF train on the Supersaver ticket; essentially forfeited and a new ticket necessitated.

I've filed for a refund but I doubt I'm going to get it.

An expensive CHF 22.40 lesson.

EDIT: SBB/CFF just came back and refunded my "wasted" Supersaver ticket, less a CHF 10 administration fee. I am impressed.

Re: The First World Problem Thread

Supersaver tickets are refundable (less a 10Fr admin fee) if you can show that you bought a full-price ticket covering the same route on a later train that day.

I believe you need to show both tickets to the conductor on the train and get them stamped or something, but I've never had to do it so don't know the details.

Re: The First World Problem Thread

This one is a topical one...

Kids and Christmas. We don't know what to get them as they already have everything! And family are asking what to get, and when we tell them they suggest sending cash, but each kid already has a few hundred s in their UK bank accounts and about 100 francs each that they don't know what to spend it on.

It's not that they are spoilt, really it isn't! Fortunate, yes. Not wanting for anything, absolutely. But they're not brats. It's just that they don't really want much other than their iPads and consoles and the games for them, which they already have. They grew out of most toys a couple of years ago, although they do still play with lego and art&craft stuff. But they already have more lego than what they use.

We ask them what they would like and after listing apps for their ipads they're like "hmmm, I don't know?"

How is there supposed to be the tree-with-gifts-beneath-it scene and how can there be any unwrapping going on when all kids want are apps!!!

I cleaned the MAF sensor on the "donkey" (practical car) - it is now happy at 50kmh in 5th gear - and has plenty of pull. The speed creeps up so easily I'm extra worried about speed cameras.

Re: The First World Problem Thread

We only know how to use 35l refuse bags and buy yellow stickers for them. Yesterday, I discovered in my basement that some "idiot" (me) left three 110l bags without the stickers. It seems like I will have to buy additional stickers for those three bags. Even worse. Idea crossed my mind that I should start using 110l refuse bags from now on.

I'm not too much worried about those three bags but possibility of getting addicted to using new 110l arrangement

Re: The First World Problem Thread

I test drove a car I was really excited about on Saturday - it was meant to be really quick on the back roads and have a really high quality level of damping.

It was very good fun.

Then I drove my existing cars and it was quicker and better in absolutely all measures.

One's sadness (yours) is another's happiness (environment) just for one day on the planet.

I'll drive one of my V8s around full throttle to balance it out

OB FWP:

I will be driving a 3,000km round trip at Christmas and would like to know how much more economical the Passat is now the MAF is working properly. It would save around 5l/100km. It just doesn't have cruise control.

Re: The First World Problem Thread

I've left Switzerland.

Back in Australia. It's 31 degrees (Celsius) and humid here.

Apart from that, my clothes don't fit back in the wardrobe easily, and everything that I used to store folded in CH now goes back on hangers. Plus I have to go through every card or membership or what not that I have and (re)update my address to Australia.
