In Basel and bored

Yes, I have looked at bars and restaurants. Yes, I have been to the gym. I have even managed to play squash... this week!!! Yes I have wandered around the city and taken in all the sites. (Ok only some.), been shopping, been to the market and eaten loads of cheese, and drank gallons of wine and beer. I am even learning german.

But what I really crave is some company in doing so. It can be quite lonely out here. If anyone is kicking around in Basel and just fancies mooching around and drinking a beer. I too am kicking around!! I am quite interesting, I dont bite, And I am pretty topical on most things!!

Lunch, Friday, Saigon Moon, midday.

Buffet lunch, Saigon Moon

Neither of us are particularly topical but we don't bite (at least not after we've eaten) and Adrian drinks beer. Me, I bake scones.

Missing Joe Banana's?
I knew Joe Banana's very well. Back in the day, it was pretty cool in a grubby kind of way. Its been through numerous incarnations since but all seem to have involved the police closing it down! Still.... its home sweet home.. Of course the best and the grubbiest place was Cinatra's in West Croydon. A place of supreme moral dereliction. There, you had to walk pretty fast or dance, otherwise your shoes would get stuck to the carpet!! It cost 20 to get in and your drink and food were free all night!! Ahh memories - they used to bus in the 'white stilletto' brigade from miles around!!

That sounds good. I am going to give that place a try tonight. I shall dine like Mr Creosote, of Monty Python fame.

Okayyyy - but, if you're really going to get a hang of this "kicking around with others" malarkey then you really need to go to the restaurant when we'll be there Hopefully see you on Friday.

Unfortunately, I will not be in Basel on Fridays until February. My loose end only runs tonight and tomorrow.

I do fancy that restaurant though. It sounds like an upmarket Mr Wongs!

That's not very fair at all. It's clean and the food is good, service is OK.

Adrian likes it very much, and he knows his Asian cuisine. If it was nearer I would be there for lunch too: it's a 248 Km round trip for me.

Hi I'm CastrofromLondon and I don't find Basel boring. Admittedly I do have two demanding toddlers, no free time and a 3 hour daily commute so I never actually get to go out

I would hardly describe mr wong as "good food" but different standards would account for that. service? what service.. its a self service place so I expect to be nice to myself.

we must be thinking of a different Adrian.

Mr Wong's has its charms for sure. I call it my Basel staple for when times are tough and i am forced to work late. Its the best place I have found to eat at after 10pm. The quality of the food is 'fair', but I have been spoiled by seriously good Asian buffet restaurants the world over.

I am looking forward to the Saigon Moon, although, I am not looking forward to the implied damage to my wallet.

Alternatively, I might just go swimming and have a liquid tea at the nearest pub to the pool!

buffet is around 20 ish francs and the normal menu is god value compared to other restaurant prices in the area.

I've never been. I've avoided it for four years cos it looks shit! (as in ... generic European fake-Asian stir-fry.)

As for Saigon Moon ... the buffet is weekday lunch times only, but their menu isn't expensive. When I go I almost always order the Pho (around 19 CHF). It's not the best Pho in the world but it beats anything else around here and I can't be bothered to make it at home. Service is very friendly. Staff overly cute - Asian styleee.

EDIT: I think Sbrinz is confusing Mr Wongs (stir-fried stuff for those who think McDonalds too tasty) with Saigon Moon (lovingly prepared Vietnamese and Thai specialities).

There's a Mike Wong's in Fribourg, if you're desperate

Welll, although I shall be dining on my own at Saigon Moon, I shall build up an appetite by going swimming and masking my sorrows with chlorinated water.

Would you know the closing time of the restaurant?

Paddys and Pickwicks are pretty friendly places to drum up conversations and meet people, hang around there a bit and in no time you should start to build a network.
