Migros recalls Gorgonzola (dolce) because of bacteria

As reported in 20min, they found bacteria which can cause/caused nausea, headaches and fever in Gorgonzola dolce from Migros. If you've purchased said cheese, you can return it at a store for a full refund.

You might know more than me LiB, but I understand all cheese is safe (Because of the salt content) and only becomes dangerous after it is cut open and packaged: ie the people handling it were not clean enough.

I don't know a whole lot on the subject of cheese and unfortunately, based solely on the article, I cannot derive the origin of the cheese's contamination.

and so my question is, was the cheese in question cut and packaged by the producer or by the retailer

Listeria in cheese is normally only found in raw milk cheeses, I'm fairly certain (99%+) that this particular cheese will be pasteurised and anyway, major contamination of Listeria is usually at the production stage.

The cheese would have been cut and packaged here in CH by the importer/distributor or by a third party handler... but knowing Migros have their fingers in lots of pies, I wouldn't be surprised if they themselves did the cutting and packaging.

If you have eaten this cheese and show symptoms of nausea and fever and you have a weakened immune system and/or are elderly and especially if you are pregnant you should see your doctor.

Don't let this put you off eating cheese (especially soft blue cheeses) as it is extremely rare to find Listeria in cheeses in large enough proportions to be dangerous. Cheeses from producers are tested randomly and regularly and small traces of Listeria are allowed and are safe. In this case it was found by Migros during internal testing. There is no mention that anyone has been made ill, and I'm guessing that the Listeria count is just a little higher than normal and they are recalling the cheese to be on the safe side.

I'm not a fan of Supermarkets, but you have to applaud Migros for playing it very safely in this case.
