| | Facebook replies are people tagged...why?
something that makes me wonder each time i click on one of my 18 year old nephews facebook statements is that he and loads of others as comment write names of other people, mostly their friends. does anyone know why mentioning names is the new sh*t? is that causing fame like who get mentioned the most?
i really dont get that concept...

Sorry, too old I guess to really get it either BUT I've been going under the assumption that they're being kinda lazy and not wanting to SHARE whatever it is but still want whichever friend to see it.
Maybe I've gotten it wrong though. | This user would like to thank Peg A for this useful post:

i really dont get that concept... | | | | | If you are a teenager it seems to be a minefield. My early-teens niece is constantly tagged and does her own fair share of tagging of all her teeny mates, usually on some fluffy picture or some other stupid chart of descriptions you are supposed to match up with tagged friends.
Her mum tells me there is real(life) trouble if someone is left off, either intentionally or just forgotten. The ensuing comment-storm is painful "Why didn't you tag me??" then a huge post mortem on who is best friends with whom, and reasons why Katie and Jenny were left off the list.
Easiest solution is to trim your newsfeed to cut out all such stuff that makes you feel bilious. It's spoiling my viewing of videos of people falling off treadmills... | The following 2 users would like to thank for this useful post:

I know what you mean and it's annoying. You can disable this in Facebook. Then no one can tag you in posts.

Dan | | | | | nono, it is not me getting tagged! funny enough i work with facebook, even in marketing etc., but it passed me by why if my nephew posts "wow, suns out, its summer" his mates/friends reply with tagging people like john doe, anne smith, etc. instead of "yeah, terribly hot, lets go for a swim?" or something that relates to that post? instead its names and that is for EVERY POST?!

It's a good way to say to your friend "hey look at this!" without having to tag a picture or share on the wall. Your friend might be interested to what you comment-tagged him/her to, but doesn't want all his/her friends to see it. Plus, your friend can just ignore it without the trouble of untagging it and just move on. | This user would like to thank jesuisuntouriste for this useful post:

Also, it's less annoying/intrusive for the friend in case the friend didn't like the thing you were sharing.

With this, comments even to nice and meaningful things became cluttered dump.
Facebook could remove these things from comments, so functionality is there and comments might be again worth reading (at least for some things)
But! It's nice way to segregate oneself (or stick in the crowd, depends on audience) as immature, attention seeking teenie-weenie. Clearly, visibly for rest of us. That way, we can put more energy towards more interesting people in crowds around us | The following 2 users would like to thank saiya-jin for this useful post:

My older teenagers use Twitter, Snapchat, and Instagram rather than Facebook. Other than Facebook, I am not on those sites, and my kids are upfront that I would not be accepted as their "friend" on Snapchat or Instagram. Their Facebook pages are idle as (in their opinion) Facebook has become the social media arena for their parents and grandparents. It is uncool to post a picture on Facebook only to have your Nana's and Aunt Polly's comments and Likes mixed around with your friends comments and likes!
I am thinking that it is only a matter of time before your nephew will have moved onto greener social media pastures! | This user would like to thank Textoch for this useful post:

Haha! Just seen this post.
Similar thing happened to me with a teenage nephew and niece.
Both unfriended me on Facebook as it was "just too uncool" to have their Auntie Ximix liking and/or commenting on their posts! Up until that point, I'd only done so a couple of times.
When they told me, I laughed, smiled broadly and said "that's mighty cool with me! You guys post like maniacs anyway, so the less drivel I have going through my Facebook stream, the better". | Quote: | | | | | My older teenagers use Twitter, Snapchat, and Instagram rather than Facebook. My nephew periodically unfriends me on Facebook because I keep correcting his spelling.
