I am wanting to buy a car for between 4000-4500 Franks. To what extent can one bargain on the price and how much ?Looking for a small car-Ford Focus,VW Golf-in that size.Any offers that one knows of? Manual and no more than 80,000 Km.Thanks

Re: Bargaining on car sale

It really just depends on the moron you are negotiating with. The moron in this case is someone who is unrealistically inflexible.

Any realistic person would have a price they will let their product go, but naturally ask for a higher price.
"Buyers are liars" and will always ask for a cheaper price than they can afford.

Usually the margin that both parties will find acceptable will be reached quickly, however it is greed that will destroy the deal.

Anyone who counters a negotiated price with "No", should immediately be asked "Why not".
If they don't have a clear answer, then the negotiation will be either very difficult if not impossible..... in which case, I hope the product for sale is indeed extremely sort after and can justify the stance (supply and demand and all that).

  • If you're buying through a dealer, find someone who will at least begin to negotiate with either price, or additional extra's to sweeten the deal.
  • Don't look at the car you want. Look at a cheaper car first to test the negotiation flexibility.
  • Insist that the price is too high and you may as well be looking at a higher priced car.
  • The dealer will introduce to you the car you do want, but naturally assumes you have a lower budget... negotiation is easier.
  • Don't be greedy, but if you're happy with the price, you'll probably secure the car you want at the price you want.
  • The dealer assumes he made a larger sale than you had intended and thinks it's a win for him.
  • Both parties smile, swap cash for merchandise, and part ways.

Re: Bargaining on car sale

with that budget ricardo is your best bet, you can pick up some real bargains there, if you're prepared to get your hands dirty you can pick up cars with no mfk for literally nothing

eg picked this up for 227 chf from recardo (no mfk), only thing needed for MFK was new exhaust back box its got full leather, aircon, abs had a couple of little issues that where easily fixed, a service (by me) and it runs sweet as a nut, even came with a spare set of wheels and tires.

It's a Rover. 800 series? I don't think they make them any more, or maybe in India?

Re: Bargaining on car sale

We drove a Rover 416 for several years, and even brought it to CH when we first came. The first time we had it serviced here, the mechanic thought it was a Honda .

That's what I thought. IIRC, Honda took over the Cowley Rover plant before the BMW buyout.

Re: Bargaining on car sale

I used to have an 800 Sterling Vitesse .. A bit like this (mine was the 'proper' green)

https://www.google.ch/search?q=800+s...6%3B1001%3B571

Very, very cheap...luxurious, stupid fast and very reliable (they were jointly made with Honda)

As above.. don't worry about bargaining.. whatever the asking price.. offer half... if it gets 'emotional'... walk away

Re: Bargaining on car sale

I recommend you buy private if you're looking to negotiate. In my experience so far (buying only two cars here I admit) dealers and autohaus owners are stupidly inflexible...to the point that they let the car sit for one year on the lot at the same ridiculous price, after which they move it to a different lot...AT THE SAME ridiculous price!

Every time I spoke to a dealer I came out angry and confused. Maybe they negotiate on new cars, but on used ones it's tough.

However, both private owners I bought from negotiated quite a bit AND AND AND we remained friends and still talk to each other from time to time!

Re: Bargaining on car sale

it depends on the person on the other side but definitely bargaining does take place. if he says 4500, u may be able to stretch it to 3800.

for an older RED car, it certainly held the colour well, only seems to show wear on the bonnet, or did you re-paint it?

Re: Bargaining on car sale

Red paint does age quickly doesn't it? Is it time, or the sunlight that makes the paint "bloom", if a car is always garaged, does the red paint last longer?

Re: Bargaining on car sale

For a car this age (I have been told) it's because it's at the time they switched from cellulose based paint to water based , but the laquer couldn't be water based , so over time the colour and the laquer seperate. This has been cured now. We bought a new car at the time (in red) and within months the paint was coming off, they had to respray it under warrantee which they where not happy about lol

You are shopping at the arse end of the market - what the hell were you expecting??

Buy this one - sold by a mechanic, cheap, pretty robust cars, cheap to maintain.
