Damn Customer Service

Once again I have been beaten by Swiss Customer Service.

I was flicking through my bills yesterday and realised I hadn't set up a standing order - and the first payment was now 7 days overdue. I went online, set it up, and fired off the first payment.

I then called the company in question, apologised for my tardiness, to which they responded:

"No problem. The mahnungs were being generated today - I will cancel yours for 10 days so the payment can go through. Thank you for calling. Have a nice day"

Honestly - How am I meant to complain on EF about crap Switzerland if they go about making life easier??

Mahnung after 7 days after the normal month or so between receiving bill and payment due date. Seems pretty reasonable, and also typical response in the UK.

So what's not to be happy about?

In my experience, it's bill, followed by a reminder, then you get the Mahnung if you fail to pay the reminder within the specified time period.

Re: Damn Customer Service

indeed I just went delinquent on my credit card because they turned off my paper bills and failed to send the e-bills to me. Two cycles of interest removed and block on the card also removed....and I did not have to rant at all.

Yeah, something like that. Never quite sure exactly what a "Mahngung" is anyway, so I tend to equate it with "reminder".

I don't get what the big deal is tbh. A mahnung is just a reminder...?! You've actually saved them and cost yourself money (yes, I know, not much) by making the call. If they'd said they were putting the betreibung on hold, then that might be something different.

Bit of a nonnon-complaint IMO.

Re: Damn Customer Service

Wait people pay their bills without receiving at least a first free reminder?

Also, all the reminders usually say that if you've paid before receiving this letter then please ignore it.

I've heard it said before but always found it a difficult concept to get my head round. A bit like people who habitually drive lower than the speed limit.

All companies don't send first reminders free but most do. They wait about 10 days before sending a reminder which gives you another 10 days.

Why the hell not right?

*Holds hand up

Through e-banking, any bill due on the last day of a month, I pay at the first opportunity the following month. Any bill due during a defined month, I pay at the first opportunity of said month. In doing so, I know exactly how much we have left for the remainder of the month, and simply makes budgeting a hell of a lot easier.

WAIT!! They've set you up. They will now send you the reminder, then the mahnung and then start debt collection proceedings even though you have now paid the bill and spoken to them.

The problem is that you have paid the original bill late and before the first reminder, so they will lose track of it. To make it worse you've spoken to them - this confuses them even more.

I wouldn't want to be in your shoes. De-register and leave the country now before they tarnish your good name.

Re: Damn Customer Service

General trick if you get Mahnung with a fee: just pay the amount without fee....they never call you back to request the fee. Doing that with Groupe Mutuel and others.

And if they insist on the fee say you paid before you received the reminder. It's not registered post so they can't prove otherwise.

This doesn't work with Zurich Speeding tickets which get referred to a judge due to late payment. Even if you paid before the date on the reminder letter you have to pay the speeding ticket + the court fees (more than double the speeding ticket in my case) and wait for them to refund the speeding ticket amount.

Dodgyken, this sounds like that thread where you told us you could eat cheaply in Switzerland and then recommended we eat Dickensian gruel.

Eh? No, I mean I find it hard to believe that some people pay their bills on time. I was agreeing with you, YTC.

Oh I know! I realised my post was confusing after I submitted it (not the first time) but thought I'd go with the flow.
