12chf for an all you can eat buffet? Bargain.

The 5chf charge for wastage is also a great idea, I can only imagine how much food they have to throw out sometimes.

That's normal in Asia ..
No food gets wasted by greedy people who load their plates with stuff they can't eat.

Re: A whole new meaning to being Switzerlanded

I tend to avoid eating "à discretion" simply because I usually then feel under pressure to eat more than is good for me.

In some situations, however, where say the price of a salad is dependent on the plate size used, I do then attempt to pile a lot onto a smaller plate but always with the intention of eating it all.

In reality, food is "wasted" if people eat it when they don't need it. Worse, it is damaging. . .

Good!

It's always disgusted me watching people piling as much food as their plate will hold then leaving most of it.

Re: A whole new meaning to being Switzerlanded

I'm not sure...so, let's say people will still pile up, since they will, I can't see them stopping. They will just end up eating even more than they would, to avoid the penalty and get even bigger in size than they already are, way to go..Unless the bufet is super dirt cheap or excellent quality, I think it is too reversed to function. Except CH, where there is not much competition in resto biz. Dunno, not that I eat out, really, but it would make me even less tempted.

Re: A whole new meaning to being Switzerlanded

We've been to all you can eat places (not here, in the states etc) and seen people take whole hamburgers and take just one bite and throw the rest away, then go back for something else, take a bite and leave the rest, get a big drink, take a couple of swigs and leave the rest. So yes, it makes perfect sense.

What if the meal tastes disgusting? Do you eat and then chuck it all back up on the plate?

If it's buffet it makes more sense to only take small amounts until you know whether you like it or not and then go back for more of what you like.

I don't think anybody will fine you for leaving a small amount of something because you don't like it.
My understanding is that it's aimed at people who take the piss and pile their plates high with far more than they can possibly eat and then leave half of it. This is a criminal waste of good food and I don't see the problem in making people pay extra for doing it.

It's a great idea to try to prevent people from taking unreasonable amount of food from buffets. I only use those buffets on holidays and I'm disturbed by how people do test and dump for so much food.

Re: A whole new meaning to being Switzerlanded

I noticed that they are starting to put signs up to ban unaccompanied under-12s visiting the buffet, too.

I know we could all look at it as a child's "journey" to "discover" food , but FFS, some parents just let their little darlings pick over the plates and maul the desserts, coughing and sneezing as they go.

Although, I've seen more than a few adults hacking up or coughing all over the all-you-can-eat table...

Because they feel they already paid for it no matter how much goes to waste, and rightly so.
The food that was not consumed goes to waste anyway, it's illegal to re-use it in most places (all), so I think it's a false problem.
Make smaller samples, maybe?

Yeah, it's annoying. I tried to kindly educate two little rascals once but the mother gave me the evil eye... There is no hope for the adults.

The point is that the wastage may result in more food needing to be prepared for the buffet that may otherwise have been kept in the stores for another meal. It's still wastage.

Re: A whole new meaning to being Switzerlanded

Meh, if one gets grossed out by kids and buffet, I think it's better to keep out. Buffets, as per Kitchen Confidental, is the most cost efficient way to sell the mankiest, least sellable stuff, anyways, and I believe it. Adults are no better, at least kids still have fresh memory with washing their hands after using toilets. I've seen some strange behavior at buffets. People get better when their stomachs fill up, true.
