Commuting from Thalwil to Zurich Stauffacher

Hi,

I am about to get a flat near Thalwil Alterszentrum. It is 1.2 km away from the Thalwil S-Bahn station.

Either I can get a car and drive to work or I can use public transportation for the work. The latter is a little tricky because I need to change two times and total travel time is about 40 minutes as sbb.ch says.

I always used public transportation until now but 40 minutes is a long time for me. I am afraid that the winter in Zurich can make commuting via public transportation even more unpleasant because of the rain and snow as I will have to change 2 times(bus>s-bahn>tram).

I wonder if there is anyone here in a similar situation. Do they prefer driving or public transportation.

Re: Commuting from Thalwil to Zurich Stauffacher

One of the reasons Switzerland as a society is so physically healthy (despite the diet!?) is that there is a culture of walking, which is supported by the great public transport. If you walk to the S-Bahn, then walk to work from the S-Bahn, you get in your exercise for the day in a low-stress way, and it might even take less time. When I look at transit.google.com it seems to show that, for the Thalwil station to Stauffacher, taking the S-Bahn and just walking to Stauffacher from Wiedikon takes less time than taking the S-Bahn and transferring to the tram to Stauffacher. I might be entering the wrong data, and google isn't perfect, but you could go see what the time is if you do the walk on each end, probably not much much extra, but quite healthy because you WILL be doing it every day, perhaps unlike going to the gym).

Take a drive out of Zurich via Brunau any morning between 6:30 and 8:30 and see the stau going in to Zurich. That will give you your answer.

Most companies charge for parking at work, the you have to pay or hunt for a parking place at home. For me public transport is easier.

Is it just me; most of the people driving are smoking.

Thank you to all for the replies.
I did the walk from the home to s-bahn and from s-bahn to office. It is a 2.3 km of walk one way. So about 5 kms per day would make me fitter for sure
I did the walk today. It was a walk under light rain in a warm weather. My concern is the cold and rainy times when that walk be a real pain as you might imagine. Or maybe Zurich isn't that cold or it doesn't rain/snow heavily during the autumn/winter? Parking is not an issue because the company provides free parking space.

Re: Commuting from Thalwil to Zurich Stauffacher

I would NEVER advise to commute into Zurich by car, it is a nightmare. From pretty much everywhere. Stauffacher is right in the middle of it all and you will spend more time commuting by car than commuting by public transportation. Around Brunau alone you will easily waste an extra 15-20mins, each way. And on top of that, you need to rent out a parking space that will cost a couple of hundred $$ a month.

From Thalwil station to Stauffacher it is only 15-20mins - i.e. 10mins to either Bahnhof Wiedikon or main station HB Zurich and then less than 5mins by tram (14) from either station to Stauffacher. Even when adding the time in Thalwil (15mins by foot, 5mins by bus), it's less than 40mins.

I know no one who commutes into and out of Zurich during "regular" rush hour (i.e. regular working hours 8-5, plus/minus 2 hours). Everyone takes public transportation and it's not half bad, even in winter. I did it for years, also combination bus-train-tram-walk and it always took me less time than by car. And bonus: free exercise.

Re: Commuting from Thalwil to Zurich Stauffacher

Driving into Zurich any time up until about 09:00/09:30 is awful, particularly if you arrive in off the autobahn onto Manessestrasse near Wiedikon.

Even if queueing doesn't put you off, surely the cost of parking in Zurich all day would be more than enough of a deterrent?? (((EDIT : I see you have a space provided by work.))) I still wouldn't do it though.

Take the bus over to the S-Bahn station of Langnau am Albis, take there the S4 Sihltalbahn. Use the exit Selnau-Stauffacher and you are right there

And the seats of the S4 are really comfortable !

Hi OP,

This is a fairly old post but that means you have couple of winters of commuting experience by now. I'm moving into the same neighbourhood in Thalwil this year. Which route did you find the most straightforward to get into town? The S2 or the S4?

Cheers

If you dont mind walking your 5km a day I'd suggest getting a decent bicycle and riding all the way. That'll be around 18km both ways. Roughly the same effort as walking 5km, and much better than public transport or car. Quicker (about 20mins one way) cheaper, makes you fit.
The cycling lane will take you all the way from thalwil to staufacher. And its
flat all the way. I was commuting from Thalwil to zurich Enge for about a year, and I only took my bike on SBB three or four times because of the weather.(best thing about that route there's like 3 SBB stops in between, so you can change your mind at any time).
Weather is statistically not too bad all year round.

Hi, if you're talking about HB only(?) , there's tons of options from Thalwil. IR, RE, S24, S2 among others.

I agree with joe. Living in the area you are moving too.....lots of options.
4 buses per hour into Thalwil zentrum then a train roughly every 10mins into Zurich..I have sent you a pm.

Bus from Alterzentrum or Oeggisbulplatz which is just Round the corner.

Re: Commuting from Thalwil to Zurich Stauffacher

@nileblitz: I received a positive answer from a flat in the city center and cancelled my rent contract for the flat in Thalwil.
I have a colleague living in Thalwil and she is always taking RE trains instead of s-bahns. She told me if you do not have many night-outs, Thalwil is good. She complains about feeling isolated, though. She says she comes to city for cinema, cafes, dining etc.
