Certainly Switzerland doesn't have an American-style culture of easy returns. But it's curious that Switzerland is moving toward that, just as America is dialing it back.

Back when we moved here in 1992, the concept of returning something was practically unheard of here. Now it's relatively common, especially with the big chains.

Meanwhile, in USA, generous return policies have seen such egregious abuse that companies are starting to restrict them a bit, beginning with requiring personal information for returns, so they can limit to so-and-so many returns per year, to stop "serial renters" who "buy" things and return them after their weekend camping trip or party is over. (No seriously... apparently air mattresses and cocktail dresses are among the most returned items.)
I returned a BBQ once I used for a whole year, cleaned up, then brought back and told them that is what I did. No questions asked. USA that is.

Re: Returns - American style

FFWD 2 years later...

I bought a chemical product from COOP for someone 2 weeks ago. Unfortunately, it's not what they want for their dishwasher. I went back to the store, showed the receipt to the cashier (I exchanged a roll of local garbage bags of 35 L to 2 smaller ones at Migros cashier before) and she said it was not possible to exchange with other products. Today I called Customer Service (FR, no English assistant) and the lady advised me to go back to the store and ask the person in charge with that department (rayon) for a refund.
