| | Coffee choices: what keeps you up in the morning?
Hi,
Encouraged by the breakfast thread, I thought of making another one with Coffee drinking in CH.
Coffee is very common all over the world, but here in Switzerland (near Italy) we have so many choices, I am totally lost.
I currently only drink a few choices:
1. At home: I use the Braun machine from COOP, so I drink Lorenzo creme coffee.
2. At work: the company provides the Nespresso machine with 6 different capsules, I usually use the light brown or dark brown capsule (don't even know their names). It is common for me to take about 5 of these at work daily.
Could you name your favorite coffee and where to get them? So the rest of us can try it... To be very clear, I don't mean coffee shops or places to drink coffee, rather coffees which we can buy and make at home.

Don´t do coffee, sorry.
Some of us prefer tea to wake us up in the mornings..

What keeps me up in the morning?
Viagra, of course, at my advanced age
Followed by a nice cup of tea.
Twinings, or some loose leaf from Coop or elsewhere

I only drink coffee at work, not at home. I have Nespresso Gold in the morning and Purple in the afternoon.

There is no need to look beyond Illy. Anything else, like Lavazza is rough as ****.
Although, isn't Illy called Amici here? At least that's what's written on the side of my can.

Good question, I am surprised at the number of tea drinkers. Of course it may be healthier and all...
I wake up to a triple dose... With three heaping teaspoons of instant coffee in a tall glass along with two päckli sugar. Add about 400 ml water and mix well ensuring a good foam is built up. The last step is the dash of milk and immediately stop mixing.
Pour into a tall half-liter glass with two ice cubes and enjoy through a straw, stiring now and then to mix the foam and drink that separates.
With that, I get my kick-start in the morning or a great refresher in the afternooon!
Enjoy

snip snip | | | | | Hmm.... I was told tea may be more harmful than coffee, or it may contain more caffeine than coffee... Oops, did I go off-topic now?

According to this page [ask.yahoo.com] a cup of coffee has 47-164mg of caffeine and a cup of tea 25-110mg. So the answer to your statement is - maybe. By the way, I'm no expert on this subject, I just know how to use google.

HAT | | | | | Tea weight for weight has more caffeine than coffee.
But you use far less tea in a cuppa, ergo less caffeine in a cup of char
Tea contains anti-oxidants etc. Dunno about coffee.
I've seen studies where weak tea counts towards your recommended water intake, whereas coffee requires extra water to be drunk.
Except American coffee, which is pish anyway...
From http://www.empirecoffeetea.com/history.htm: | Quote: | | | | Convinced of the poisonous effects of both tea and coffee, King Gustavus III of Sweden ordered the reprieve of two condemned criminals, provided one drank coffee and the other tea in vast quantities every day. The College of Physicians was to dissect them when they died and confirm the dangers of the drugs. But the criminals outlived both the judge and the physicians, while the king himself was assassinated. | | | | | |

I used to think green tea had no caffeine - but then I found out that it does - about half the level of black tea.

We get all our tea and coffee at a nice wee shop in Basel called Moccaraba: http://www.moccaraba.ch/
I like the selection of coffee varieties - my favourites being the Havelaar and the house blends. They have a coffee roaster at the back of the shop and the aroma when that is going is fantastic - provided you like the smell of coffee that is.
Cheers,
Nick

Coffee and chicory is what gets me going in the morning and I'm bringing a bunch of it when I move to Zurich from the bayou later this month. I haven't heard of Illy and I'm curious to try it since it's getting so much attention. I assume it's available in the supermarkets?

Like, it's there, but not easily processed.

Well, I've never had any problem waking up early or falling asleep without the help of a drink or pills, but since I have a nice Jura machine and considering I just have to press one button to get a fresh cup of Java, that is what I drink early mornings. And when I am feeling like spicing things up, I throw in a shot of Amaretto and top with whipped cream. And don't ask how many calories there are in that last drink. All I know is that it tastes great.
