Cheap laptops - worth importing em?

If anyone is after a cheap laptop drop me a pm, attached is an example price list, a mate in the uk is looking at the possibility of setting up an outlet here, so would like some feedback, good idea? bad idea? no market for it here?

the prices in the list are in GBP, so you'll need to convert em

Re: Cheap laptops - worth importing em?

Good Lord no!

I buy Swiss because the higher price means that it is much better than the allegedly same but cheaper models over the border... we all know that in truth they are not the same!

definitely a market but don't forget that most people prefer a Swiss keyboard and a Swiss plug.

If he can refurbish them, changing the keyboard is not a big issue, but of course will mean increased prices.

Has your mate considered what import duty customs will charge for each laptop?

This might make the idea totally inviable.

Its something we need to look into, as he is a legit company then it would all be done above board, as you can see from the prices it wouldn't be huge amounts of duty anyway

He needs to get the pricing so that it comes in under the "magic" 60 CHF including postage and taxes, otherwise everyone if going to be slapped with a bill on entry.

Also if he is going to ship to CH, he needs to find a shipper that knows how to deal with this without charging lots of admin fees and pissing the clients off (http://www.englishforum.ch/complaint...issed-off.html).

Re: Cheap laptops - worth importing em?

I doubt There will be any market for it other than the tightest of expats. Switzerland is already one of the cheapest places in Europe to buy computer equipment, and you can already get a new laptop with 2 years warranty for under 400chf. What your mate will be selling will likely end up at around 250-400chf.

Then there's the issue of how much the battery and hard drive will have degraded on those multiple-year old laptops, meaning the warranty service (if any) would need to be at least a year, and based in Switzerland.

Personally I don't think it's so viable or necessary in CH. Good luck to your mate whatever he tries though.

He already has deals with the big courier companies, this is just testing the waters really, the price you're quoted would be the price you pay, so they would all be shipped here in bulk, then sold, not shipped one by one.

He generally ships out by the hundreds, companies want to update there laptops his company comes in and wipe them, refurbish them and generally sell in bulk to distributors, now he's looking and expanding his sales channels, to an extent cut out the middleman

seems a lot of grief to me, but I said I'd ask and help out

Re: Cheap laptops - worth importing em?

As a totally legit importer your friend will also have to cover the recycling fee for electronic products. For a 12' laptop this is about 5-6 CHF apiece, but he will have to join a recycling organization and handle the admin overhead. See here for an example: http://www.swicorecycling.ch/de/administration/beitritt
And your friend will have to provide a Swiss law warranty for the goods sold in Switzerland.

I was thinking that he may not get the choice as to what the charges are.
Customs may not see the price he wants to sell at as the true worth.

thanks

the swiss law warranty bit made be chuckle my experience of that has been "we'll send it back to the manufacturer at your cost"

just to clarify

this would be a box shifting type company, make and model etc would be supplied but taking individual pics, upgrading etc etc would be out, or course that also means you could get lucky and get an upgraded laptop.

otherwise the costs and of course prices would start to rise sharply.

He only needs to change a few key tops and ensure the correct keyboard software is on board.

It might not be a big issue (no, that's not a crack about him becoming homeless if he trys this!). There is a decent sized expat/foreigner market here anyway, for one thing, so which layout would he switch them for anyway? Lots of Swiss people here, yes, but a significant number of other nationalities too, and the Swiss seem really keen to only "buy quality" (which in reality just seems to mean paying over the odds for sh...stuff), so perhaps he could concentrate on the foreigner market first, perhaps only offering US, UK, and German layouts?

Handcuffs? Floggers?

Not that I'm interested at all, just... err... curious about the kind of company you keep. Ahem.

Re: Cheap laptops - worth importing em?

Excuse me for saying, the heading is missing "Second-hand" or "Used"

They are rather old by Swiss standards, software, Vista/Windows 7

If looking for Used cheap laptop, most would surely first check Ricardo.ch

In Switzerland the very latest is sold, then the shops will start to discount/sales for other stock once it is outdated, so then as the richer people buy, they sell their old laptops, sometimes at very low price.

Anyway good luck to your friend, maybe he will find a market!

Re: Cheap laptops - worth importing em?

Not everyone is an expat earning a decent wage, students, minimum wage earners etc who can only afford 100 chuffs for a PC for instance.

Lots of people don't trust auction sites either.

He asked me if there was a market here, I'm trying to find out
