Re: Dating Swiss Men?

I just moved here from California earlier this year - there's this man there that I find totally love and he takes me out to lunch about once every two weeks and is a total gentleman (30s). I know he's single and about my age. He asks lots of personal questions about my family, etc..

I'm having trouble reading him though - is he just being nice to a newcomer or is he interested in something more? He doesn't really seem to seek me out much outside of work, like for a drink or dinner or something? This has been going on for 3+ months.

I know in the US, a guy generally makes his intention much clearer. Hoping someone has some insight into swiss male dating habits! I read through this whole thread, but no one seems to talk directly about the topic.

From a guys perspective, even taking into account Swiss male introverts, if he fancied you then he would probably have made some kind of move by now.

However what have you got to lose, ask him out on a date.

You know, sometimes life is much simpler if you figure out what you want and go for it, rather than figure out what someone else wants. That works here in absence of such certainty. There is nothing special or different about the Swiss per se. Just be yourself.

Good advice - I just don't want to be *that* American girl.

@Richdog - I would like to think that guys go after what they want too

But if you were *that* American girl, so be it. I'm sure he's interested because you are different. They need "different" here. Don't try too hard to fit in, for your own sake. It makes life bland.

And we work together... I guess that's always the complication.

However, I'm sure Swiss people also get it on at work all the time too (right???)

The norm is that 99.9% of successful dates come from women asking man out first in CH

Re: Dating Swiss Men?

In 3 months he could have made time to take you out and make his intentions clear to you. Or he has been burned before and waits for you to make the first step?
btw I read 'donating swiss men'.. maybe time for new glasses.

Like work together all the time? You interact with each other on the same team? Again, that is not particularly a Swiss thing, its common sense. If you complicate things, you complicate things. But you simply do things and take responsibility for them. He's probably wondering about the same things you are.

Hmm, more likely he is already in a relation and wants to look around a bit...

Sounds like Hellagood just wants to get it on, Marvin Gaye style anyway.

Hellagood, try hinting and see where it gets you.

Re: Dating Swiss Men?

Alright - I guess the consensus is to go for it.

The guys will have to get used to some Julia Roberts / Erin Brokovich style work clothing I suppose.

Okay, so you will have to report back on the results. Careful, don't hurt yourself.

Re: Dating Swiss Men?

Thought I'd give an update in case anyone was interested (sorry forgot my username to the other account). Well, it turns out he was interested but very, very shy (and proper!). Probably not surprising the more I learn about Swiss men. They really want to make sure they're doing the right thing it seems and he thought I had a boyfriend and the whole working together thing. It's really refreshing in a way to meet a gentleman again , although sometimes you just want them to kiss you already.

Anyways, we're good friends now, things almost happened, but didn't. We ended up going on 20+ "dates" outside of work (although being my first Swiss guy - I'm not sure they constituted dates, but that's what I call hanging out by ourselves at night over dinner or whatnot without meeting anyone else, lol).

Anyways, always like hearing about other people's experiences...

Re: Dating Swiss Men?

I guess I never did meet his parents (which I think is the EF equivalent of "he sees you as marriage material"), so it wasn't a real relationship

One interesting fact for all the single ladies out there about being different from Swiss girls. He said a lot of Swiss guys are scared of them or find them boring because they're not sweet and sexy. Haha.

I personally have one or two Swiss girlfriends now that I really, really like. They're super fun once you get to know them and I can laugh for hours with them, but I can see how from a guys' perspective they can be a bit scary / direct / get your bum in line or else...

All of the Swiss girls I have dated were certainly not scary. Lacking in excitement, perhaps.

Russians, however...
