ladies bike- fixed gear bike vs geared bike? [ZH]

buying a ladies bike for my wife, her first bike(yeah i know she started late), i have found some cool dutch hollander style ladies city bike single speed, however I am a bit confused if it will make it tough for her and that I should rather pick a bike with gears.

how do you find riding a fixed gear/single speed bike in city?

Re: ladies bike- fixed gear bike vs geared bike? [ZH]

Dutch style bikes are like that because there are no hills and many cycle-only paths in Holland. If, where she'll be riding, here, is the same, then that type of bike will be fine - anything other, then gears will be required ...... although this will complicate the riding experience - especially for a woman.

Also, worth noting, that a proper Dutch style bike, doesn't have handlebar brake levers - you have to pedal backwards to operate a rear (only) hub brake - now that will confuse her.

Wish i'd saved myself a bit of money and skipped buying a normal 21 gear? bike and gone straight to buying an 8 gear? electric bike.
hills, weather, adventures become a breeze here.

not politically correct but true.
my mother is bicycling for about 65 years now but is still always in the wrong gear.

captain obvious to the rescue:

you can use a bike with gears as if it were a single gear bike. not vice versa.

generally one of the heaviest ones.
that explains big thighs of women: pure muscles of bicycling.

Since you are sure that women cannot shift obviously in whatever gear you leave it in for her...
