| | How to stop junk phone calls?
My wife gets a lot of junk phone calls to her Swisscom mobile number, from insurance companies and the like.
Is there some registry or something, where you can "opt-out" of such calls? In Canada where we're from, there's a registry where you do this, then they aren't allowed to call you anymore (doesn't always work but certainly helps)
thanks!

You can complain to your service provider, Swisscom, Orange, Sunrise.

thanks! | | | | | If your number is listed in the telephone directory without a star (*) you will get these calls. Look up your number in directories.ch or tel.search.ch and see. Having a star unfortunately no guarantee that you won't get such calls. As has already been said, contact your service provider.

After each call has been abruptly cut off add the number to her contacts as SPAM10, SPAM 02 etc and refuse they calls...

After each call, just add that number to call barring on the handset - that should slowly wean them out.
Otherwise she can use some high pitch producing device (I have an old battery operated bike siren) or a whistle and make a very loud noise into the phone.

Thanks everyone for the helpful replies.
@TiMow you definitely win the award on this one -- both me and my wife laughed great idea!
So I checked on tel.search.ch, and she does already have the * for no advertising. She also does already add call barring for each number, but it is a different number that calls every time (a different company even). I'll tell her to keep doing this...

Respond in a language they are unlikely to know.
Eventually they'll get bored and give up. |

If she has a bit of time on her hands when a call comes in, she can ask the caller if they've found Jesus in their lives ...... ?

Sorry for opening up this old thread. Not spotted the obvious / easy answer online on my searches.
I have a sunrise mobile contract. I would like to stop getting as many cold calls as I get right now.
I didn't find my number listed at all on these Websites - not sure if that is a good thing or not. Look up your number in directories.ch or tel.search.ch and see.
Is it still a case of phoning up the service centre of the relevant phone company to get your number blocked (so in my case the Sunrise helpdesk) or is there a better / alternative way now?
Thanks

Thanks | | | | | Your mobile number won't be listed in a directory.
You can block numbers on your phone (iPhone anyway)...

Settings—> Phone—> Silence Unknown Callers.
If the caller is not in your contacts or recent outgoing call list it won’t ring, but be sent to voicemail and recent call list.

You don't need a high tech device, you just need a no tech whistle |

Thanks | | | | | I have installed local.ch app on my iphone and I must say I am really happy with it...blocking works pretty well and it even identifies numbers for me so I know many times who is calling (and if I should answer )

Many scammers and telemarketers will regularly change the numbers they’re using, or spoof new and different numbers to avoid getting blocked. | | | | | | This user would like to thank bowlie for this useful post: | |

Thanks everyone. I am already blocking the individual numbers after calls. Just would be nice to get even less unwanted calls. I am going to try the local.ch app (or an alternative) as I still want to be able to receive calls on my phone from numbers which i don't have saved.

I just simply never answer to any phone calls coming from unknown numbers.
I do a quick online search after the fact to check if it was something legit (most of the time isn't).

I'm with Swisscom and they have a spamcall filter which I've activated. I would guess the other major providers have something similar. This blocks the calls before they even get to my phone, which is great.
For those that do get through, I have local.ch which does a pretty good job of identifying other junk calls. It depends on input from users, who label the callers accordingly. On my phone, such calls are identified as "suspected call center" or "suspected spam".
If I have time and want to have fun, I'll take the call, without identifying myself (just say hello). I'll listen to see if I can work out where the caller is. In the Suisse-Romande a lot of the call centres operate from North Africa and the operators have a characteristic accent when speaking French. I simply speak to them in Swiss German (doesn't have to be very good), or even in English, which most can't understand either. The real objective is to derail them from the script which they're supposed to use and waste some of their time, so they can't scam others.
