Another useless statistic drawn up by some junior analyst who's probably never really lived abroad. Thanks for the thread. You might as well post the useless Mercer study, so that we can save a littlle cyberspace.

Re: The best places in the world to be a rich foreigner

the report becomes particularly interesting if you filter the results by factors solely limited to integration into the local culture.

the kind of expat surveyed by HSBC in connection with the "study" does not live in Switzerland, they live in what is affectionately known in US expat circles as "Euro Disney". and I really do mean "affectionately known", Switzerland is without question the number 1 expat assignment of choice for every American I have ever met, including myself and my wife, and there isn't a close second.

How is it possible that UK and US rank below Saudi Arabia?
A country where there are only sand and sun, and where you can better not be a woman.

because the typical expat in Saudi gets 1.5 to 2x his or her home pay (to compensate for the fact the assignment is in Saudi) and on top of that pays no tax. this can often work out to 3x or more on salary once you factor in the lack of income tax and the fact that there is nothing to spend money on in Saudi.

If Saudi ranks high on the list, I question the demographic sampling set.

Yes, you can make a lot of money, but you live in a "compound", your freedoms are restricted and there is fu@&-all to do on a weekend. Think Xenophobia is bad in CH? Go live in Riyadh for a year. This is like club med comparatively.

Sorry- I don't buy it.

they typically don't live in Riyadh, they live within driving distance of the King Fahd Causeway (read: Bahrain).

spend 5 days in Saudi and I promise you will stop halfway across the King Fahd Causeway to kiss the earth of Bahrain, and the first beer you have in Bahrain will be the best you have ever had.

I will admit Bahrain is much better than in 93 which is the last time I lived there.
One western expat bar with the same damn karaoke machine and the same songs.

But even now, NO. never again.

Very weird ranking indeed. Sure in Saudi Arabia you can save a lot of $$$, but whats the point of having $$$$ if you are basically living in hell ? Any country in which they behead people publicly for crimes ranging from sorcery to adulatory is not a country I would like to spend a day of my limited time on this Earth

And I believe that if you are rich foreigner you can thrive pretty well in the US , you can get a great house in Florida/California, enjoy 300+ days of sunshine , something you cannot really do in Switzerland.

Re: The best places in the world to be a rich foreigner

the hsbc ranking seems to lean very heavily on the financial part. switzerland and saudi are the same in that sense. switzerland has the absolute lowest or near lowest ranking in the social/entertainment categories.

high in financial though... plus, its "easy to adapt to the weather" here. so switzerland ranks first. lol.

(okay so fair enough. ch has good financial and good environment, but no social. the rest has pretty much only one of those three)

Re: The best places in the world to be a rich foreigner

I found it interesting because i agree with the points noted in the report. One of the things that enjoy the most in Switzerland is the fact that my 6 year old can walk to and from school (1.2 Kms) without an adult accompanying him and without his parents worrying about his safety. i dont think many countries can offer that.

If you are rich, you can have the best of everything anywhere you happen to be. Most rich tend to live in exclusive neighborhoods, go to exclusive school, etc. Switzerland offers tax breaks for rich foreigners, hence, a no brainer that it is voted #1. It has beautiful landscapes but so do many places and people are much warmer.

South Africa ranked #2 in raising children? JNB was one of the scariest places I visited.

How about get a boat and make sure you don't stay in any country more than 183 days. Technically you will not be a tax resident anywhere in the world.

Except if you are an American person, you are still dinged on your tax liability by "L'Oncle Sam" wherever you reside
