London vs Zurich

Hi all,

I'm currently based in Singapore and am looking to transfer back to Europe. I have the possibility of transferring either to London or Zurich. I am actually a dual Swiss British national and grew up in Geneva so I speak French but my German is quite bad and I have not lived in Switzerland for over 10 years. As I lived in London prior to Singapore, I'm rather tempted by Zurich even though i don't speak the language.

I'm a single 34 year old woman so the dating scene is quite important to me but i'm also looking to settle somewhere permanently.

Any views/advice would be much appreciated!

Re: London vs Zurich

As it is a Swiss forum, I think people will tend to say Zürich then. It really depends on whether you prefer a big city life like in London or otherwise. Zürich, for me, is just reasonably big with easier and better transport possibilities.

As for dating scene, well, statistically London has for sure more singles and many people complain about social life in Switzerland in general. Having said that, one can feel very lonely in a huge city like London too....

And your readiness to learn a new language German is also something to be considered. If you don't bother, then go to London.

34 and single I think you need a world class City, not a backwater. London all the way unless you want to major in the outdoor scene.

Re: London vs Zurich

How long did you live in London previously and how did you find it overall?

How long have you been in Singapore and what's the "dating scene" like there for you?

You say the "dating scene is quite important" to you. Well, there are those who say there isn't one in Zurich. Period...

I think that depends solely on the individual. There are no absolutes in this regard and I wouldn't base your decision to come to Zurich - or not - as the case may be, solely or largely on that.

You've nothing to lose by giving Zurich a go as regards broadening your life experiences and having an opportunity to pick up on your German again, thereby adding to your language skills.

If you love the outdoors and are sporty, then Switzerland is hands down a great place for this and which, depending on the sport(s) of choice, offers plenty of opportunities to meet potential dating partners.

If endless variety, choice, diversity etc in just about everything (including dating) and the opportunities this affords is of greater importance to you, then go for London, assuming you liked and enjoyed your time there previously.

In this case, come over to Zürich. London has no lake, and no mountains visible behind the lake

I know that lake, and even went there swimming once (in the late 1990ies) but compared it with the Katzensee

What is more important to you? outdoors and nature, or a social life? You will make far more friends in London, while you'll be lucky to make any at all in Zurich.

As for dating, well you're lucky you're a woman, so dating is pretty easy for you anywhere, but if you want guys handed to you on a silver platter then its London. In Switzerland even as as woman you may actually have to put in some effort as Swiss guys rarely approach women. In London as a woman you'll be approached left right and center.

LOL! Yeah, in London they flock to your feet everywhere you go!

It's just as well then that not all the guys in Swiss are Swiss besides which, that assumes the OP is hetero!

Re: London vs Zurich

Well if your workplace here in Zürich is an international company then it should not be a problem that your german is not the best. I think you would pretty quickly get your German together. If you put all other issues aside ( like dating etc )and then consider where would you really like to live, then maybe it would be easier to make a decision.

Re: London vs Zurich

Seems to me that if you've got friends in London from the last time you were there then that's a good route for meeting yet more people. Hopefully I'm not the exception but my o/h and I met each other in our mid-thirties in London (through friends). I'd say the scope for meeting people is vastly greater in London given the population and social scene (though I don't know and probably will never know the Zurich social scene as well!) Most important thing is to get out and be active wherever you are - plenty of social networks in and around London (London is not the be all and end all in the UK) are there to facilitate that. Maybe go to London and do an evening course in German!

Re: London vs Zurich

I think the key is where will you be HAPPIEST living - ex the dating scene.
When you are happy, the dating scene frequently takes care of itself.

So I think the key is to figure out which city works best for you ex the dating scene. These are some of the questions, I think you need to answer

Your job and career- what location offers more interest and opportunities for your career?

Your life outside of work? What city better fits your outside interests (are you in to sports, the mountains, the forest and the lake or a very robust cultural scene - theatre, dance, music?

Where do you already have friends and acquaintances? Already settled friends will make it much easier to get involved in the local social life.

Both cities are wonderful. I have lived in both.

I would choose Zurich for the outdoor, more relaxed pace of life (knowing the downsides are less culture and a more limited social scene.)

I would choose London for the culture, the extensive dating scene that is lively for people in their 20s through their 50s (knowing that it is much more congested, much busier city, and will most likely involve a tedious, stressful potentially hour long commute)

In the end, it comes down to your priorities and the environment where you will be most comfortable.

I must admit I am now married to a Swiss (who I met when I was working in Amsterdam) and Zurich is the best city for us as a family with young kids. I love going back to London, but I could not live there again. It has just become too much of a daily grind.

If I was single, the decision would be harder, and a I think a lot of it would come down to the place that was best for my job and my longer term career.

All the best!

-D

I say move to London to work and date. Should all work out, move to Zurich to have a family. I think Zurich is the best for families but I struggle with getting to know people/make friends here.

Loads of people don't speak fluent German in Zurich but English and French will help you.

btw, I met my Swiss husband in NYC when I was 34. ;-)

Re: London vs Zurich

London is huge is can be really lonesome place, but you do feel you are in one of the centres of the world and has a buzz. I left in 2007 and had visited it a few times this year – confirm the comments by others that London had changed tremendously.

Zurich has better quality of life, especially for families, but I struggle with the mentality and the quality of jobs on offer (in the latter UK has more to offer). If you have family in Switzerland, that would be extremely useful for support once you have your own family.

I would take whatever had been said in this thread for information only AND FOLLOW my own gut feeling. After all moving into one place does not mean you will have to spend your life there. Who knows, you may end up in New York! Good luck whatever you decide.

I haven't been in London since 2000 (on a week's holidays). What changes should I expect to see if I go back?

- gbp/chf down from 2.4 to 1.5
- many shops closed down, some recovery since the worst of it
- house prices went up
- rents went up massively
- taxes went up

from an economic point of view, much worse conditions, esp. if you don't already have a house there as it is now impossible for most to buy and very expensive to rent.

Re: London vs Zurich

@mattalex - sorry but I'm just not sexually attracted to Asian men. Asia's also a big place and it depends where you're referring to. I've dated a couple of Indian guys which was a complete catastrophe. It's just much harder for western women to date non-western men because of the need to be accepted by the extended family. Asian men also tend to be physically smaller and skinnier and have an extremely pragmatic outlook on life. Extreme pragmatism is not sexy - men are supposed to peacock around women; that's the way seduction works to a greater or lesser extent depending on the cultural context.

@ Switzerlanded - I somewhat agree with some of what you say. Hardcore feminism and gender equality is destructive to society.
