Re: Your favourite French language movie

So many- but for language learning the Jean de Florette et Manon des Sources (from the books by Marcel Pagnol) and La Gloire de mon Père, are lovely classics. Many with lots of slangs maybe not so good, like one of my favourites for portrayal of life in multicultural Cités in France (and racism) is La Haine, de Matthieu Kassowitz.

BTW it is 'les bronzés' (not 'ées) as for a group of males and females, not just females.

About wars of religions, but quite violent 'La Reine Margot. Quite violent too, one of Depardieu's earliest films 'Les Valseuses'. And based on Zola's book, re the closure of mines in the North East, and the exploitation of miners 'Germinal'.

Re: Your favourite French language movie

Les Visiteurs and Indochin are two of my favourite movies in any language. Very different though. First is a time traveling comedy, the second is a family (and national) drama set in Vietnam in the run up to decolonisation.

eta. Or independance as it's otherwise known......

Harry, un ami qui vous veut du bien (a psychological thriller)
Dans la maison
Potiche
Sous le sable
(all three by François Ozon)
Le fabuleux destin d'Amélie Poulain
Les parapluies de Cherbourg (all dialogues are sung, with a young Catherine Duneuve)

I think these ones were not yet mentioned:

Jeux d’enfants

A la folie..pas du tout
Hors de prix (what can I say, I like Audrey Tautou)

Le scaphandre et le papillon

Taxi (it is a series of 3 films if I recollect correctly)

Re: Your favourite French language movie

I enjoyed L'homme du train. Oddly enough it stars Johnny Hallyday but don't let that put you off.

When I was a student I really enjoyed Diva - very cool and stylish. I saw it recently and just thought it was plodding and rather dull. I suppose it's something similar to revisiting places you knew from your youth.

Your favourite French language movie

If you're into dark surrealism, then definitely Brunel.

And I still like Diva!
