Your favourite French language movie

I have been brushing up my French proficiency (haven't really used it for a while) and for this purpose I have been relying, among other things, on one of my hobbies: watching movies

I have been so far referring to some lists on IMDB for French language movies, but would like to know your recommendation or your favourite ones. My preference would be something that has comedy, family drama, or reality drama (not really into the cheesy or corny ones) in it (would preferably avoid horror and thriller for this matter). It could be the most recent ones, but I also enjoy some old school stuffs

I really liked The Diving Bell and The Butterfly (Le Scaphandre et le Papillon). It's not the most cheerful movie in the world, though.

Le train de vie

It's about a Jewish village during the 2nd WW. The villagers decide to fake their own deportation to escape the real one and set off on a train, some playing Nazi officers as "guards".
Wikipedia reference-link[n their escape route through rural Eastern Europe, the train sees tensions between its inhabitants, close encounters with real Nazis as well as Communist partisans, and fraternization with gypsies, until the community arrives just at the frontlines between German and Soviet fire.

I saw it many years ago and remember that, despite the tragic historical background, it was partly very funny.

I loved it. Also, a big bonus - the music.

Another one by the same director, very touching:

Va, vis et deviens
Ohh that should be a perfect combination of what I'm looking for

Shame I live out in the sticks- as I have space for a ciné-Club- could meet once a month here to watch a good French film and then discuss (in French).
Maybe we should organise an EF event for those who enjoy French language movies?

(Word of Warning: violence, blood, incest, boobies, full frontal male nudity. Not for PG-13 audiences...)

Also:

Les rivières pourpres
Les anges de l'apocalypse

For a French film, that's a minimum.
I love Ridicule, by P. Leconte.
Well, it was my intention not to spill it out in the beginning the main reasons for watching French movies

The music was composed by Goran Bregovic (well, more like he worked on some traditional themes but it has his touch, clearly) and it's mostly klezmer style of course. (I personally love klezmer music)

If you like surrealism, try something by Luis Bunuel; "Le charme discret de la bourgeoisie" or "Le fantôme de la liberté".

Re: Your favourite French language movie

My childhood has been much richer with gems like
Le Grand Chemin
Any movie starring Louis de Funes (especially the series of Le Gendarme)
Rabin Jacob

I second Les Intouchables et Bienvenue chez les ch'tis. LOL guaranteed.

Right now you have "Qu'est ce au-on a fait au bon Dieu" (in Deutsche it is Monsieur Claude und seine Tochter) in the cinemas in CH, you may give it a try. We saw it yesterday and it was a nice little movie (there is a rather funny reference to Rabin Jacob). As my OH said, nothing to discuss about (unlike Amelie), but it was a nice way to unwind.

All of these plus Bienvenue chez less Ch'tis would have been on my list.

Les Bronzées are all a bit corny but quite amusing nonetheless.
