Career advice

Hi all,

I hope I am in the right section. I am looking for career advice.

I am working for several years now as a IT support agent. I like IT even though it is not my field, but to say it clear I cannot stand taking calls the whole day anymore. I realized I won't be able to be an helpdesk agent for long so I'd like a career change.

Unfortunately, I really don't where to head for. I am pretty good with HTML, CSS and JavaScript. I've got a PHP foundation certifcate and I am actually studying Java to get the first Oracle certificate.

My Question is: What would I need to get a decent job in IT? What path would you recommend now? How can you get your hands on softwares like Avaloq or SAP?

Any information is welcome as I am a bit lost!

Re: Career advice

There are usually plenty of permanent programmer jobs that only require 1-2 years experience.

Java and .NET developers are the best paid general developer roles. PHP, web design (HML/CSS/Javascript), mobile app and game developers typically get paid less.

Product specalists (SAP, Hybris, etc) can get paid a lot more. But its harder to walk into a role. You usually gain experience on the job, after being hired for another role.

Continue doing the formal training you have been doing. Java certification is a pretty good idea.

Then you need to get some relevant work experience. I would recommend signing up on eLance and applying for project work, or building your own commerical website/app/software in your free time.

Once you've done that, start applying for jobs. Your help-desk experience is very good. Combined with some formal qualifications and a little practical development experience, you should be able to secure a role somewhere. It might only be a 2nd-level support developer (fixing bugs), but it's a foot in the door. You can look for another job/transfer/promotion after another year of work experience.

Software development is a constantly changing industry. You need to constantly keep your skills fresh. This may mean changing jobs every 1-3 years. When chosing which job to take, you always want to weigh up the benefit of gaining new skills/experience with the salary and other benefits.
