Tracing Family or Friends

I have several times seen requests on here, Facebook and other social media for details of long-lost family members or friends. These may well be genuine but they do concern me.

Unless you personally know the person making the request, there is no way to be sure that what they say is genuine. On a forum such as this one, where real names are usually not used, the risk is even greater. They could be trying to locate someone who does not want to be found for totally genuine reasons e.g. having escaped domestic violence. Even if there is not a suspicious reason, the person being sought may have a totally new life and not wish to be associated with their former circumstances e.g. a parent who had to give up their child but is now in a new stable family.

If you see any requests and have some information, please make sure that the person you know about is completely comfortable about this before passing details on. Most reunions have happy endings but I'm sure none of us wish to be party to creating a bad situation
