What happens if you fail to register at gemeinde?

One hour wasted in the queue today and had to leave. May not be able to register on time now. What are the consequences of non-/late- registration?

Doesn't matter - they will find you. I was out of country when my B-permit expired. Husband's HR Dept. said "No worries - do it as soon as you return." And I did. I received a letter today from a representative of the Polizei that I have been deemed a "suspect" and required to attend the appointment they set up for next week.

My flight back to the US leaves on Saturday. Thankfully, a few phone calls, one major translation and all is well. If I wasn't de-registering, a fine, I've been told, was imminent.

This must be the Basel-denial phase.

I heard you can choose between a 10000 CHF fine, 3 months in jail or live for 2 additional weeks in Basel.

I was the same but when I called they said it was fine because I'm EU

I was 3 or 6 months late, obviously I don't remember, but the fine was around 45 francs or so in Bern but the woman waived it for me.

But then again, there are those labour camps ....

You should get away with crucifixion.

Don't forget, Phil - You shouldn't take too many risks since you're already famous (or is it infamous?) ;)

Deportation for sure, along with seizure of your mattress where you're hiding all your 1000 Franc notes. :p

Since the topic is implicitly about registration at gemeind without queue up, I have a question: is it possible to arrange an appointment (for residence permit procedure) in advance at the gemeinde (by phone or by email) in order to avoid the queue?

I never had to wait more than 5 minutes in Switzerland. I don't think you need a appointment.

Depends on the canton. Here in Zug, pre-registration was mandatory for some (eg when I went for my C permit, because biometrics were required).

Are you going away then? If not- get back there on Monday and explain what happened, and backdate registration if necessary to keep within the law. Different here of course in rural area- but they are very friendly here and will just laugh it off- not if you are weeks or months behind though.

So, Phil wht happened in the end?
