So next weekend, Sunday 8 March, is International Women's Day (IWD). According to the official IWD website it's slim pickings for celebrations in Zurich, actually for all of Switzerland. Zurich is in fact the epicentre of Swiss IWD activity by comparison. And those events that are listed are organised by the expat community. (fair disclosure: I know because I'm organising the 'Miss Representation' film screening).

http://www.internationalwomensday.co...h#.VO4bGfnF-So

So what's up with that? Why is IWD a non-event for the Swiss? Just a quick peek at little ol' Ireland (my home country) by comparison and there are pages and pages of listed events. Why is Switzerland apparently so backward in coming forward, so to speak, when it comes to celebrating women's achievements and seeking gender equality???
Y'all already get mother's day, V-Day, Potpourri Day, every other friggin day is Ladies Night somewhere. What more do you need, our blood?!

Jealous much? If you join us for the next dinner club in Bern, I'll buy you a drink...even though it's ladies' night

I see right through your scheme 3wishes. Trying to lure me out so that them spinsters in Bern can take advantage of my innocence. . . I won't fall for that again.

Re: International Women's Day: (not) worth celebrating?

The idea and the meaning of the 8th of March was noble and worthy. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Inte...omen's_Day
What some idiots did was - they added flowers balloons and chocolate... Sort of like, 'there, eat you chocolate, sniff flowers' and shut up.
I hope all the comments here are just a friendly banter. Some of you have wives, daughters. I hope they have equal pay, have a fair chance to sit on the Board and that their opinions are heard.

Funnily, when I was little I once asked my mum "We have Women's Day, when it's the Men's Day" and she answered "It's every day, dear"...
I didn't know it was a classic joke at that time, I thought my mum is being serious and couldn't understand what is she on...
Fast forward and jokes aside, I think both genders have some privileges if we can call them like that. But inequality - where and when it counts e.g. salary, politics, power positions, decision making, health, etc etc - remains a real thing IMO.

I'd like to have a Harvey Weinstein balloon right now and pop it in celebration of women all around the world.
