Robotics and intelligent computing is going to be the end of everything for everyone

We are all doomed. In the next 20 years millions and millions of people will lose their jobs and there will be civil unrest, mayhem and chaos. We are dead. We've had it. The end is nigh.

Here are just some if the reasons for mass unemployment coming your way soon:

1. Practical AI like Watson. That's all IT, (all, even high end), research, support, legal, customer service, accountancy and law jobs gone.
2. Robotics. All manufacturing, including in China, down the swanny. All customer service in shops, resteraunts, anywhere.
3. Driverless cars. No garages, taxis, bus drivers, signposts, most of the legal industry, most of the insurance industry.

Very very highly skilled might survive. But just being for example a brilliant software engineer is no longer enough. AI will eat that up.

It's game over. Retrain as a beggar now, you'll need to be good, there's going to be a lot of competition.

I will get a Suisse guarantee tatoo on my forehead to increase my hireabilty; but jokes aside, this impending singularity will change warfare for ever. Human armies will probably no longer be a match for bot armies.

I'd be more concerned if we don't get the robots to work! With an ageing population it's the only way we can hope to continuing getting our hands on the little inexpensive luxuries we like to enjoy.

Unless of course, one would happen to be working/studying in intelligent systems...

Not so. In an experiment recently they fed Watson, the ibm cognitive computer, all the papers ever written about some vitamin, b-53 or something (you can look it up on the Internet). It read all the papers at light speed of course, which it was calculated would have taken a scientist 38 years to read, and not only did it know and respond to all questions in b-53 correctly, it made six new discoveries!!.

Up until now I was like you - always work for those in the field or at the high end, but it's not the case. AI will soon be as good as you are at programming or studying the AI field, and in a nanosecond, it will be miles better, making you redundant.

Re: Robotics and intelligent computing is going to be the end of everything for every

I have technical magazines from the early 1960s that wrote that within 10 years computers would be able to translate any human language just as well as professional interpreters.

Now look at Google Translate.

In the mid 1950s scientists predicted that by the seventies the entire energy demand of mankind would be satisfied by nuclear fusion. Clean, cheap, practically inexhaustible.

Predicting the future always is a tricky matter because it is in the future. Nobody predicted selfies, pet stones or the need to take off your shoes at security check.

Re: Robotics and intelligent computing is going to be the end of everything for every

Once the driver-less automatic car arrives, I imagine it will be snapped up by all the alcoholics that have lost their driving licenses. Will you need to be sober before switching the car on and beginning a journey?

However if the automatic car malfunctions & accidentally kills a pedestrian, will the car passengers be jointly liable for the insurance payment, or the owner, or the garage that sold the car? Or the person that switched the car on? Or who?

In short: that's not how economies work... you can of course let robots product stuff and let robots fight wars and let robots... but: If everyone besides a few percent is unemployed and poor: who buys all the stuff that those robots make?

Don't forget - the problem of millions not having an income will need to be solved simply to allow the products of those robots to be sold which (not who) churn out stuff 24/7.
