BBC - Living in: The world’s best cities for expats

Zurich makes it on the list along with a number of other places I would not have thought of...

Zurich, Switzerland
Much like Luxembourg, Switzerland attracts expats interested in the country’s banking industry and financial markets. Zurich, in particular, draws a diverse mix of Swiss German, Swiss French and Swiss Italians, along with other nationalities – and almost everyone speaks English.

“The city has a very high standard of living, so most expats are very comfortable here,” said Gayle Cotton, a former Zurich expat who visits frequently and is the author of the book Say Anything to Anyone, Anywhere! 5 Keys to Successful Cross-Cultural Communication.“In addition, there is a great support system for parents with children, and the schools and medical treatment are excellent.”

Residing in downtown Zurich is expensive, so most expats live in the neighbourhoods near Lake Zurich, such as Kilchberg, Thalwil, Horgen, Zolikon and Meilin. “Commuting to the city is easy with the efficient public transportation of trains, tram and buses,” Cotton said. While making friends here can be challenging due to the formality of the business community and the private nature of Swiss Germans, in particular, the friendships that expats do make can last a lifetime.

Re: BBC - Living in: The world’s best cities for expats

And yet again another post about how Zurich is the only place to be. Whereas us lowly peeps live in other lovely places. And love them.
And have no reason at all to visit Zurich. We have all we need here and there.

It's like saying the whole of England is London. Which my sister in law thought it was.

I vote for Riyadh. You can save most of your salary and give your liver a rest.

Re: BBC - Living in: The world’s best cities for expats

Sorry but the list is a joke... Guayaquil and Mexico City?

I've been to both, you couldn't pay me to live in either one.

Have friends for years who grew up in both places - neither are safe. When you think of 'family life' forget it.

Both places must have been voted for by the sex tourists that live there, either that or they don't want to publish 20 cities in europe for the 10th year in a row so they don't look racist.

Both are great. NYC can be tough, it can eat time like nothing else, but it's vibrant and inspirational, positive.

For half my life (until I moved here), I lived 20-60 minutes from NYC (only lived in New York for school).

Been to NYC perhaps an average of once every two years, hate it.

NYC is one of my most favorite cities in the world; however, I could never live there again. I used to live in the West Village and visited there a little over a year ago. I went pass my old flat and I chuckled at myself: I looked at it like it was some type of shrine or something! But anyways, NYC is just not my style anymore, but I do love visiting and getting the heck out of there!

Indeed. And for entertainment there is always one or two public beheadings, stonings or floggings to wile away the odd evening.

Traffic must be awesome as women are not allowed to drive.

And wherever you go on holiday, beer will be cheaper than at home.
