British Expats! It's Mother's Day this Sunday 15/3/15

Just a very late reminder!

It's Mothering Sunday aka Mother's Day this Sunday, 15th March. (It changes every year as it aligns with the Easter calendar).

It might be a bit late to order a card to arrive on Saturday (unless you get on the UK site of Moonpig and order today by 2pm UK time) but perhaps if you've forgotten you could do a google search and order some flowers or a plant from the nearest florist to your mum's house (or get your dad or sibling to buy something on your behalf?). Or perhaps a gift voucher so she can have a nice treat?

If all fails.....just call your mother on Sunday....she would love to hear from you!

I feel for you Belgianmum, I am so lucky to still have my mum (and my dad). She is 84 and doing great. I dread the time when they are no longer around.

Re: British Expats! It's Mother's Day this Sunday 15/3/15

My mother always enjoyed receiving cards on whichever day was selected as Mothers Day wherever I was living (granted I always missed her "local" one).

Regardless of how people feel about days for this, that and everything else, the history of UK Mothering Sunday and its connection to the church calendar for the celebration of Easter is somewhat interesting. In earlier times it was on the 3rd Sunday before Easter when young women "in service" as domestic help were given the day off to visit their mothers. Simnel cakes are also associated with the date as well.

There is a little bit more info - from a school project - about the origins of 'Mothering Sunday' in the UK (which has always been on the 4th Sunday of Lent since at least the 16th Century, according to the report in the link). It is also associated with people going to their 'Mother Church' - the nearest big church ie. Cathedral, at this time:

Apparently in Surrey, Mothering Sunday was also known as 'Pudding Pie' Sunday.....Mmmm, how nice!

Thanks, very interesting. I hate the mordern commericalism of it all- and yet- I really enjoyed getting cards from daughters in the UK and phone calls today (mind you, I enjoy getting calls from them and grandkids any time), and soppy messages on FB.

I think it's turned into that a bit these days, but when I was growing up, Mother's Day was a chance for dad and the kids to give something back and let Mom know how much we appreciate her. We made mom breakfast in bed (God bless her for eating it), gave her homemade misspelled cards, sticky handmade gifts of whatever was around the house that could be glued together...we all have some fond memories.

Re: British Expats! It's Mother's Day this Sunday 15/3/15

Aggrieved that I had to dip into my meagre allowance to buy Mother and Father's day gifts, I once asked my mum why there wasn't a 'Children's Day'?

Quick as a flash she replied, "every day is Children's Day"
