First day of Summer

Let's see it from the positive side: Summer can only get better from now on.

Actually, the days are getting shorter from now on.

We're heading towards winter.

It's already here in Glarnerland: fresh snow on the mountains and a chill in the air.

Might have to get the ovens going again.

Re: First day of Summer

It can't be the first day of summer - it's midsummer's day; the nights are drawing in.

Re: First day of Summer

It's midsummer day, not the first day of summer. I'd say we've had a pretty good first half and am looking forward to the rest of summer.

P.S. happy birthday to me. I'm always moved by the fact that so much of the world celebrates with me.

Re: First day of Summer

Ancient Anglo-Saxons recognised only two seasons, summer (commencing in April) and winter (starting in October). Although they didn't actually fall in the exact middle of these seasons, the solstices were recognised as the mid-points of the seasons -- midsummer's day and midwinter's day.

Funny, you never hear people talking about midwinter's day.

In Australia, the seasons are deemed to change on the first day of March (autumn), June (winter), September (spring) and December (summer) -- so the equinoctes and solstices are at least a little closer to the middle of each season.

Well, only the undereducated or very naiv can make such a stupid remark, only valid for a young pupil, at best.

Last summer was indeed a bad summer regarding rain and sunshine, but especially temperature-wise. Though the first half of June had record high temperatures! Nevertheless, the years 2014 and 2011 were the warmest years since the beginning of recording in 1864 in Switzerland.

Now, I leave it to the rather limited equipped brain to find the (actually easy) explanation to this paradoxon.

You really are a quite humourless and sour individual - you must be an accountant.

I hope you don't take everything you see, hear and read at face value (especially on this forum) ....... unless, of course, you are an accountant.

Meteorologists count the seasons from the first of the month, astronomers use the equinoxes and solstices.

In Northern Michigan, the four seasons are Cold, Darn Cold, Effing Cold and Construction.
