Indian Student in Lausanne

Hi,

I am an Indian student coming to Lausanne for a PhD in Neuroscience at UNIL. I have received the Swiss Government Excellence scholarship and will be receiving 1920 CHF per month. Insurance will be paid by the scholarship awarding authority and I have been allotted a room by FMEL which is 600 CHF per month inclusive of electricity and internet. I wanted to know what is the average expenditure on food that I will have to do per month. Are there any cafeteria at UNIL where I can get any discounted food for lunch everyday? Or do I have to carry food every day for lunch? I am comfortable doing both but still wanted to know.

Thank you

Welcome to EF!

As long as you don't have expensive tastes, living on around ~1300 p.m. isn't difficult. You will have some other expenses- telephone, transport cards, and commune related fees for your residence permit.

All of UNIL's cafeterias (except the restaurant) are subsidised (although I wouldn't recommend buying fruits from there- a banana costs CHF 1) and open on most weekdays. If you prefer, you can have all your meals at the cafeterias. All cafeterias also have microwaves- if you'd rather warm your food. The average cost of lunch ranges from CHF 8- 12. For breakfast, snacks, and beverages: around CHF 12 during the course of a day. And another CHF 8-12 for dinner. If you were to cook from home, I doubt if your monthly grocery bill would exceed CHF 500- unless you are the champagne and caviar sort of person :D.

Perfectly doable. Food/Travel/Entertainment is very subjective. Food you can do as low as CHF 300.- if you cook all yourself.

Thank you so much for your replies. Another thing that I wanted to know as to how do I travel from Echandens to UNIL. I have been placed in the FMEL hostel at Echandens. There is also some subsidy for travel for students right? Also, in my scholarship they have mentioned that I will get some subsidy for local travel.

Well... Simple_person... Thank you... But a little more specifics would be really helpful... Like is there is bus service or do I have to take a train? Thank you once again

You could bike (might take around 20 mins max) or else take the bus 705 from Echandens to the stop after EPFL (assuming you will be at Amphipole?).

The following links will come in handy when navigating around:
http://www.sbb.ch/en/home.html

http://www.t-l.ch/

And for your travel/transport card in Lausanne and surrounding regions: http://www.mobilis-vaud.ch/tarifs-mobilis/

I haven't heard of this subsidy- but you have reduced subscription if you are 25 and under or if you hold SBB's half-fare card.

Locals, yes, fairly easy. But not a newly-arrived from another continent.

OP, you probably want to accustom yourself with some core ingredients while you're still in India. Perhaps join/start a thread on "inexpensive indian ingredients in Lausanne" or similar. Or PM people who are posting in these types of threads.

This is the FMEL site with a bit more info, including maps and means of travel.
