Is crossing the road illegal?

I can't get a straight answer for this from Swiss people I know but I've encountered in some countries that it is oddly the case. So I ponder here.
Is crossing the road at places other than zebra crossings/when lights are red illegal in Switzerland?
What kind of charges can be levied?

Re: Is crossing the road illegal?

Are there zebra crossings in the middle of lake Geneva? Just swim.

On shore, if there is a zebra crossing less than 50 m from where you are, you are supposed to go and cross there. Otherwise, it's allowed to cross if there is no zebra crossing. If anything is red, you stop.

I have been following the rule of "when on zebra crossings, only (but do!) stop when you see red light."

In the French-speaking part it is advisable to look left and right before crossing anyway, as some drivers don't really believe in yielding priority to pedestrians on zebra crossings.

Without adhering to the 50m rule you risk a fine of CHF 10. Source

Don't forget to smile and give a little wave to the cars that stop, it makes the drivers feel good. And you too.

I have characterised the non-stoppers (here in Vaud- there is a 0.5 probability that a car doesn't stop at the crossing) into two:
-Those that don't see you waiting by the zebra crossing
-Those that do see you (they even glance or stare)

I can't explain why the latter doesn't stop. In a hurry? Distracted? Ignorant of some nagging rules that they stipulates they should stop?

I can afford 10 chufs.

I cross when I've established that it's safe to do so. I never rely on the green man as there are a lot of drivers (and virtually all cyclists) in Zürich that just ignore crossings. With the drivers it's less so with light controlled crossings, but those bloody cyclists couldn't give a toss.

I'd rather pay up the the 10 chufs than get run over on a legitimate crossing.

Aside from the actual legality of the "rules", the way I had it explained to me is that you are teaching young children bad examples by crossing somewhere without a green man (when available) . It has certainly made me more conscious of doing the right thing...particularly when children are around!

Cannot complain more on the cyclists! I myself also cycle, and I try to respect the lights/zebra lines as much as possible - it is also safer to yourself, so why not? But whenever I stop, but someone else simply cycle through, there is a subtle feeling of unfairness aka "I could have done that and been 10 sec faster..." but anyways, safety first.

and for the ones that don't the "stinky finger". For me all red lights are green-so go. At the zebra crossing at Limmatplatz Zürich the bastards are reluctant to stop

Phew! Thanks for this clarification, st2lemans! The only one place where I repeatedly don't use the crossings happens to be near my flat- and which is on a 30 kph zone. I had been expecting a flurry of CHF 10 fines...

30kph zones by default don't have pedestrian crossings, only if increased protection is required e.g. in front of schools. Though vehicles have way of right, everybody can use the street provided they don't hinder the vehicles. Car drives have to be particularly careful.

In 20kph zones (start and end sign) cars have to give way of right to everybody else. Pedestrian crossings are not allowed.

In both cases at crossings vehicles have to give way of right to those from the right.

To add to this, with an unbroken line in the middle of the road I wouldn't cross it & only use a pedestrian crossing too

Police took my 7 year old's class out to practice crossing the road.

Acknowledging the driver with a wave and smile is part of the curriculum.

My daughter told me one of the policemen stopped a motorcyclist for a "special" chat when he decided to ride the pavement outside the school.
