I'm smiling because it is a lovely story- and you may well have found a dog sitter for next time you go away- hope you keep in touch

I've not seen her since, so I don't know. I hope I see her again. . I was happy that my crazy pup has really turned into a good pup. We also have friends visiting this week with two kids and Lily is really appreciating the affection.

Re: I smiled because...

Hi, in the God peace!

I´ve forgotten this - In 2003, when there was the reunion of G7 (Évian, France), many protests happened in Geneva. As I´m so curious, I watched some protests in some places in GE.
I sat down on a building window to watch it. I felt the atmosphere was so hot and tense and there were many people on a little street, situated by side of Confederation´s Street.
Suddenly, a group of public order policemen entered in that street, they dressed in black and with batons, teargas and guns.
I started to be nervous ´cause the atmosphere has already been tense. Only thing that I heard it was the policemen asked to everybody to go out there, however, in the same time, they started to block the exit of this street.
I was in panic, ´cause I felt something no pretty could happen. I looked at to two exits, one is blocked by crowd and other one, by policeman.
Fortunately, they left a little space to evacuate the crowd. When I could get to go out there, I ran so fast and I heard the sound of shots with rubber bullets and teargas grenades after they have blocked totally the little street.
I broke a record to myself, I was so in panic that I think I did 5 min (running) - Confederations Street until Planpalais.

Re: I smiled because...

I had to visit London for the dentist and on my way back went via St Pancras station.
For any visitors who go through, someone has had the brilliant idea of placing 3 pianos down the main concourse for the general public to use while they are waiting for their trains.
The first piano had some youngsters just playing odd notes, the second one had this guy playing some cheerful tune, the third one had this young girl playing the most beautiful tune and she was an excellent pianist. She had everyone memorised. I spoke to her and she informed me that her dream was to be a concert pianist and she had reached Grade 8 in her piano exams.
FANTASTIC!!!

Thanks for sharing this..It's heartwarming to see dedicated young people working toward a goal. They should put up more instruments in the underground.. would brighten many people's days for sure.

They are leftovers from an installation called "Play me, I'm yours" which had its first outing as part of the City of London festival in the old financial district

Old pianos are decorated by local artists, then placed in public, and auctioned off at the end. The project, by Luke Jerram, has been in 47 cities now, including Geneva, but London was one of the first. I remember in the first iteration, that alongside the street pianos (which were a beautiful concept but not always in the best state), several churches and music halls opened their concert grands as well. Lunch break, then popping out to play Chopin on a CHF 150k instrument: wow.

Believe there is still one in Stansted airport, and a couple of train stations as well as Kings X.

----------

Little things but after a rather horrible day:

- picked up my UPC Cablecom modem. The "free" internet works better than my BT package, at 3-4x the price, worked in London! Fast enough for Netflix and Skype. I'm a happy bunny.

- 500g of chanterelle mushrooms for 10 Fr in Migros means I will be a happy mushroom chomper this week

Re: I smiled because...

I remember a long time ago, I´ve heard the word SPEECH which two people were talking near by me, My brain processed Gossip (in Portuguese) and that´s why I always use this word ´cause it is so cute for me and I love it. I don´t like gossips even if it´s about celebrities lives, no either about the people lives. I prefer this:
A man who made laughing million and million people in entire world and through many generations.- Charlie Chaplin
I can watch his films several times, but each time with a different regard ´cause I´m older in each day.

Re: I smiled because...

I recently saw a programme on TV with Uri Geller (the bent spoon man) and had to smile. My Swiss wife and myself lived in London from 1962-67. During this time UG was very famous for his 'tricks' on TV. We went to visit some friends and of course UG was one of the topics we discussed at the table. Then we all burst out laughing because my wife asked 'Maureen, have you ever had anything bent in your drawers?'

Never forgotten.

Re: I smiled because...

Some friends brought us Turkish Delight as a gift from their recent trip. It's clear the label was auto-translated and no human bothered to read it before it was approve for printing.

Ingredients (emphasis mine): white sugar, water, cornstarch, citric acid, honey, pistachio, vanillin, trace amounts of appetizers.

In reading the German and French lists, I think they meant to say trace amounts of nuts (as an allergy warning).

... because the doorbell rang, and there was one of my Swiss students who attended my first ever residential course in the UK... Summer 1998 - she 'd heard from another student from that 'batch' that I lived here now. With her OH and 2 kids- ahh lovely.

Re: I smiled because...

just because.. no real reason.. perhaps the gentle feeling of settling down to a long winter of studies.
Never thought I'd love it this much.

Happy for others and their lives.
Contented with my own.

A good reason to smile

Publication dates are finally set for my new book and an amazing anthology where I'm featured. Best of all, my publisher wants to use one of my paintings as the cover image

That is a gorgeous shot. If you enjoy memoirs, I can recommend "Part of the Pride: My Life Among the Big Cats of Africa" by Kevin Richardson. Look him up on youtube for some heartstopping lion encounters
