Re: I smiled because...

... because I made a much younger friend happy- she told me she was looking for a retro coffee table, 3 legged triangular with formica top. She has been scouring the internet and the brocantes in vain for a year- took her to the barn, and 'voilà' - should have seen her face hurrah (was given it it a a birhday present when I was 10- 28th of Feb 1961 and found in my parents attic when we moved here).

http://blog.theanimalrescuesite.com/...itten-pig-love

A kitten and a piglet have struck up an unusual friendship after meeting each other at an animal refuge. Marina the kitten was rescued from the street where she had been abandoned shortly after being born, while Laura the piglet was rescued from the grounds of the meat factory farm where her mother is still confined. Both of them are the youngest inhabitants of the Santuario Igualdad Interespecie, a sanctuary for rescued farm animals in Santiago, Chile.

Re: I smiled because...

Watching Tuffy the moon bear enjoy life after being rescued by AnimalsAsia from a bile farm and transported to a sanctuary in Vietnam.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R1fldVOREoA

This organization does amazing work, saving bears subjected to illegal bile extractions from across China. Last week, a farmer has called them up to voluntarily hand in his bear Chau, in a bit to offer her a better life. I hope this trend of voluntary hand over continues.

Chinese law only punishes those caught redhanded while extracting bile from moon bears, which makes it pretty hard to prove that the bears in cages are held for those purposes. Hence for the moment, all the organization can do is attempt to save as many bears as possible.

For those interested, they also post daily updates on rescue missions here, allowing us an insight into the work of vets, drivers, volunteers who make sure the bears safely arrive to their new home:https://www.animalsasia.org/us/media/news/

Re: I smiled because...

honestly, because of a forum post I saw yesterday. There was a post simply titled "Refugees" and, living in America and being from the UK, I expected it to be full of anti-refugee rants. I was hugely surprised and deeply moved to see that it was a question on how the poster could do more to help these people in need.

Gave me a great feeling and makes me happy to see such good people in the place I hope to call home.

Re: I smiled because...

What make me smile was there was an animal well supa vet programme on last night. There was this dog who was only five years old but had chronic back problems - so this supa vet did the most amazing things to his spine and hips with a lot of metal and screws, very touch and go if it would work.. well some months later he was running and jumping into the river....well to see his expression before of total pain to his sheer pleasure to enjoy his life as he should made me smile........

Noel Fitzpatrick is the Supervet, he is an amazing guy, performing ground breaking surgery on animals. I would recommend watching, you will smile a lot and shed a few tears too.

Re: I smiled because...

.... when I recollected something that happened at Coop.

I had been trying on hats and wasn't convinced by one. I decided not to take it and when keeping it away, this fellow shopper came up to me and asked (in a French Vaudoise accent) whether I was buying it (cue me thinking: "someone would like to buy it instead"). I replied that I wasn't sure because so much of subjectivity goes behind choices and I have to think. And the lady advised me to buy it as I look good in it. She left the store and, yes, I bought it .... and was reminded of this thread.
