Re: I smiled because...

Because the pond is full of strings of salamander eggs- and Minou tripod has been helping me gardening all day- and planting the new raspberries. He follows me everywhere - so cute.

Maybe a wife that is older than the husband, and/or one without children?

maybe a gentlemanly way to say she is a wife who just happens to also be "an old maid"..., probably haggarad looking for her age...poor husband.

Re: I smiled because...

A delightful find as I did my Saturday shopping in the village:

LEK Höfe, a group that promotes using plants native to the region in gardening, was giving away lovely plants this morning - gratis! The idea is to encourage people to plant more natural gardens, with native plants that will attract native fauna.

So I got free raspberries, woodland blueberries, Preiselbeeren, and Waldbeeren.

For free!

Until approximately 50 years ago, women resident in the UK, unmarried and over 2l years of age, were legally referred to as "a spinster of this parish" (whichever parish applied).

probably not, you can tell them appart.

The gecko emigrated from the UK to sell insurance in the US, whilst its cousin the salamander remained in the UK and went into book publishing.

Or a woman who married a man who turned out not to be able to consume marriage. Poor woman.

Thank you.
But does << spinster wife of Thomas Rotheram>> not more sound like a man than a parish?

Maybe lizzards? We got them here - more in the Ticino though. I love them, none around here though

I smile because I successfully finished my project plus I really enjoyed this "handyman-stuff" specially after a week on the computer.

woman wasn't able to consume, or the man?

"Consume" when talking about a woman and a man makes the mind think the silliest of things ...you meant consummate, right?

Finishing off with bangers&mash. A handywoman deserves a decent meal, right?

Had a great day but what's even better: I thought it was Sunday all day long. Yet it's not apparently

32 years ago I was a “spinster of this parish” when our bans were read out in our local church, not sure if it is still the same.

My back, arms, shoulders; ok most of me aches from digging and weeding the fruit border today. The joy of now living in our own house with a garden.

Our visitors of last week brought us some “Bury black pudding” and some proper sausages. They are cooking for out supper with potatoes baked in the embers of the bonfire.

Just a near perfect day!

Oh, and a bottle of local burgundy Pinot noir, what more could a girl want?

I used to have a convertible (lol ... a 2CV - it was my mum's) but learnt to drive in another, a TR4 (my BF's at the time)- loved the TR5 and the TR6 too- but always regretted not driving at TR3.
