Apparently the shortage is everywhere, for a number of reasons. One is a virus black birds are fighting. Another is a mild winter that did not starve the birds enough for them to have to look for food closer to humans.
Thanks a lot!
Worried about "my" blackbird couple now who I believe was the same breeding in "my" tree two seasons in a row and are nowhere around since a long time.

Let's hope it's the second reason then.

Can't be the cats, this is cat's paradise and the birds were never impressed by them. From when I still had a cat I remember there are so many mice around here that the cats all take that - lazy - path when hunting.
A mouse a day in her peak days.

Re: I smiled because...

An other thread here reminded me of shopping in a tiny Volg on Tuesday. Someone was at the check-out, so I wandered off to a section behind it. When I returned an other woman was ready to pay and ...... was waiting for me to come back to my trolly! She seriously was gonna let me pay before she would. I said 'no way, if it worked like that I'd park my trolly there when entering the store'.

Still, I was quiet amazed. While I have not encountered people push past in queues in supermarkets - anywhere else though - but often offer the ones with their 1 sandwich/1 drink lunch to go ahead, this was definitely special and worth a big smile.

I payed after her ..... just in case that is important

Re: I smiled because...

To finish the bird-thing. Again dead silence all day - apart from two magpies having a domestic this morning (which was okay, they've not been here before either).

Now, almost dark, there is a whole bunch of little birds here all of a sudden, chattering away! LOL.
They have discovered night-life - watching me probably.

So my is back too.

I like other people being into birds, makes me smile..

And then some off the grid exercises we did yesterday and the honesty they were done with. When people allow themselves to be genuine, they learn well.

Re: I smiled because...

Waiting for the bus with my daughter, who's on crutches. There was a young family next to her, mum and two kids - a very little girl and a little button - just back from the kids' Fasnacht. I encouraged the kids to throw confetti a my daughter, but they were too shy.

A few minutes later, I was covered in confetti. The boy had snuck up behind me and ambushed me. Clever little tyke!
