34. Greek/Belgian/South African and now British too. No. He went home yesterday, but it was like having a very handsome bodyguard for the week.
You know, for his next trip over, Geneva is very nice

Re: I smiled because...

I used this really neat cash book software for years, which let me have my chart of accounts = keep control over what goes where. After updating to win-10 they said, sorry for win-10 you need to update and pay us Fr. 9x.00 for it. Of course I couldn't even access/open this years book-keeping anymore.

So I grumbled for a month or two while shifting "find a new free software" from one to-do-list to the next. This morning I decided I will not swallow this and at least give it a try. I downloaded their latest software and booom, everything was back and running. I didn't even have to enter my license-key (probably still stored somewhere deep down in my computer).
Nice try folks, we don't have the proverb "Probieren geht über Studieren" in the German part of Switzerland for nothing.

When I put that proverb into the dictionary, it comes up with "The proof is in the pudding." Huh?

One for any legal geeks and newcomers.

On Saturday at 8pm GMT, The Secret Barrister's Legal Live Tweet subject will be 'Love Actually'. This is following on from the legal implications and arguments of previous years concerning 'Home Alone' and 'Home Alone 2'. As the Barrister says, "Bring pizza and wine".

Re: I smiled because...

I moved my Mom into a new Assisted living facility with Memory Care. She has struggled a lot with "Sundowner's Syndrome" and my once, sweet, lovely Mom was transformed into an agitated, angry and distressed Mom.

I was in Switzerland when her situation took a turn for the worse and felt so helpless. I came back to the US and was able to rearrange her furniture, hang her photos/artwork (with the help of my kids) and she seems settled and comfortable now. But the initial transition was not easy as my siblings all work and had no time to prepare her new place.

Sometimes, living overseas is not the easiest when it comes to family issues. But I am happy that my Mom feels settled, safe and less agitated.

Really happy for you and your mom, Terrifisch. The worst part of living abroad is seeing your parents getting old so....fast? Or at least they look older each time....getting all those things that come with age.

There are moments of happiness and peace in between. We have to hang on to those.

Thank you! You are right Greenmount; I am trying my best to spend as much time with my Mom but I sense her days are numbered...

And... I forgot to mention that my heart aches at the thought of losing her. She raised nine children and is/was such a great role model for me...

Re: I smiled because...

terrifisch, please be be kind to yourself. I lost my father to vascular dementia 14 years ago. I moved back to Scotland from London and looked after him in the early to middle stages until he needed professional care. It was a great privilege to be with him when he died, but realistically it's not possible for a lot of people. I like to remember my dad as the proud hardworking man he was, not the man he became through illness.

Re: I smiled because...

Reading this advert, I had a surprise:
<<But when you have the whole world in 3D, things become exponentially tricky.>>

It does?
My world has always been 3-D and I travelled it just fine.

He's not getting either, and definitely not the ones with the bells. Can't have the neighbours thinking I've kidnapped Santa and his reindeer.

Re: I smiled because...

I bought some new trainers with an impromptu CHF 20.- off because they were on a shelf which was marked with the price of a different pair of trainers by mistake so they let me have them for the lower price.

The Pogues - Fairytale Of New York has made it's way on Swiss Radio!

I was pretty surprised ..... or did I just not notice this in other years?

Re: I smiled because...

Great work Christmas drinks last night!

... although the venue only let us have our tables for two hours - they were overbooked, and decided to remove us at 7 to free up the tables for another three groups. Makes financial sense for them, since many of our group were starting to slow down and the boss wasn't going to order any more food, but still ... :/

Another positive: I know one of the staff who was working last night extremely well, so after being evicted from our table a few of us pulled up at the bar and got a couple of free drinks.
