Prague central square giant Christmas tree will be recycled, students will turn it into furniture for a local nursing home.

Re: I smiled because...

... because the pile of pruned branches from the old lilac, which we piled at the back near our wildlife pond- to serve as winter protection for all the alpine newts and hedgehogs- has been turned into an igloo by our huge group of resident sparrows. First they dug out a few small holes, and with the sun it has merged into one big entrance about 25 X 30 cm. They come in and out all the time, stand on the 'front porch' and obviously feel very cosy and safe in there. Lovely.

And as nettles grew through the branches, they have lots of nettle seeds in there to feed on- as well as all the feeders up here by the house.

Re: I smiled because...

Because snow brings people together. I noticed my cat getting rather agitated about something outside, upon following his gaze I saw that the post lady was stuck on the path and trying to shovel herself out. Since it was my lunch break, I decided to grab a mug of coffee and headed out to see if I could help. She was having to carry piles of parcels through the snow because neither her little bike thing nor her trolley were any good in the snow. So I helped her carry them and held the big pile while she sorted them to the letterboxes. Yes, of course I wore a mask.

While she was popping in the last letters, I went to ask the staff at the restaurant nearby (Burgers and Shakes in Glattpark, they were busy filling home delivery orders) if I could borrow their snow shovel to clear her path while she drank the coffee to warm up a bit. After about ten minutes a fellow came up to me and said that he would take over, he was from the restaurant and they didn't have any orders at the moment. He was still shoveling twenty minutes later, what a legend!

So now I am back at my desk and feeling invigorated from the fresh air and smiling because there are other people who are happy to help a stranger. The smile on the post lady's face was definitely worth the muscle ache I'll probably have tomorrow.

Normally, one should not talk about good deeds and the intention is not to boast: I'd simply like to invite everyone who can to be aware of people who may need a bit of help with navigating the current weather conditions. Obviously stay safe when doing so, but those with prams, walkers, sticks, or other things affecting their ability to get around are particularly vulnerable right now. And I don't think it's fair to tell them to "just stay at home".

By dinnertime tonight, Spray-tan Stalin will have been demoted to nothing more than a sour, sapless septuagenarian with a Damocles sword hanging over his hate-filled head. The end of an error.

I very nearly had the audacity to correct your spelling, then realised no, that's right.

Before even Biden even started his speech I wrote a post in the Trump thread, asking the mods to close the thread

When I sent it off the reply was "sorry, the thread is closed". LOL.

Re: I smiled because...

... because we have just come back from a big walk in the woods, on open trail, and it was so magical. Every tree bent over and like a snow sculpture, all sorts of shapes, some like huge snow spiders, another like parents and a child, bent over and braving the elements. And little Emma running around like crazy in her red coat - she still runs like a greyhound, making hand brake turns- so cute. 15.5 years old.

Little Rufus has developed a liking for Harry Potter. She announced her excitement for the third installment with "I'm so excited about The Prisoner of Alikazam".

People are known to swim in the lake here over the winter months, I just saw the Bohemian version of that: https://www.idnes.cz/usti/zpravy/otu...21e_Cnovec.jpg

Re: I smiled because...

My cleaning lady and her adoration of my cats is quite something. Working from home means I get to hear her fussing over them and having full conversations. She is currently apologising profusely to (and judging by the muffled sound of her voice, hugging) Hamish for having used the "nasty, noisy hoover". He tends to supervise everything she does, including sitting in front of the shower and meowing in a concerned tone when she is cleaning it.
