Ok, there seems to be quite a few threads about various disadvantages about so I'm going to be sickeningly cute and cuddly and suggest a thread where you can all tell us about the last thing that made you smile and maybe make others smile too. It's not all bad and life is absolutely too short. Go out, play in the sunshine, feed some ducks, smell the flowers and so on. Then, tell us about what made you smile.

And the last thing that made me smile is stumbling upon my reputation and seeing the lovely comments people took the trouble to make. Thank you!
We had a nice chines girl staying with us for a few weeks, we laught so much with her. She was realy funny. Its great to see someone so young able to just laugh over anything funny. One day she laught so much she had to lie down. We laugh a lot between us my two girls allways have something to laugh about.

Re: I smiled because...

Yesterday we visited a stately home. My daughter remarked how it reminded her of European homes, which was not surprising as the owner Edith Wharton, one of her many favourite writers, spent a lot of time in Europe. Of course she has read her books and was trying to educate me. I remarked "Yes, darling, it's all very Versace cum Versailles isn't it, a kind of baroke rococo" The look on my daughter's face as she rolled her eyes was priceless. At least I thought it was funny.

...because today I did something I'd never done before and didn't know if I could do. Always a nice feeling.

Edit: no, not that.

little one speaks her first words. How precious and so many to follow yet.

I recorded it for the future (as so many things in the early year).

Re: I smiled because...

I got a "finger-wagging and tell-off" from a unknown driver who saw I had taken my dog off leash for moment to take down a gate at the trail-head so that my horse and I could pass. The leash was clearly visible hanging from the saddle but he proceeded to block our path with his vehicle. Luckily my dog stayed quietly by our side while he approached us screaming and pointing to get in my face. He didn't like it when I photgraphed his license plate number.

I smile today for all of the lovely friends I have made riding that trail on a regular basis (dog with us on the leash) over the past 11 years. I'd never seen this guy before and hope I don't again.

Yes, I do know the leash laws and abide 99.9% of the time. Still, I had heard about these kinds of encounters but it was my first time.

My Brother's local pub has Glen Matlock (ex Sex Pistols) playing a free gig soon. My brother's group will be the support act.

Re: I smiled because...

Not much of a smile this one. More like a laugh out loud moment. I was taking my dog for a walk and we saw a cat sitting in the middle of the street. And how did the little mutt react? He saw the cat and he run away with his tail between his legs! Maybe getting beaten up by the cat when he firstly arrived left an impression :P

Next-door's kitten is back. She has 6 toes but is a great vermin cat, - all the better to catch chipmunks with!

Re: I smiled because...

We got our tax bill reduced by a few thousand francs which was lovely, the people in the tax office were lovely, the lady in the post office was lovely after we accidentally defaced their display package, the coffee at the City cafe was (so I'm told) lovely, the Adler beer at the City cafe was (so I discovered) lovely, the nice man in the antique shop who sold me a 194? satchel was lovely and Glarus town in the sunshine was lovely.

All in all, a lovely day.

Except that I thoroughly dislike sobering up in the evening. That's what night time was invented for.

Re: I smiled because...

I was painting the railings. I could smell pesto, I was hungry and started to imagine what my neighbor was cooking, the smell was so intense, I was salivating. Then I looked down I was standing in the Basil patch. I smiled took a bunch of leaves and stuffed them in my mouth.

Re: I smiled because...

i saw a well dressed, respectable old swiss gentleman immediately gave his seat to an old muslim lady with traditional muslim dress, and stood up in the tram through the rest of his trip

it almost changed my perception of swiss people a bit, but then i remembered 99% of the rest of my encounters in trams under similar circumstances and quickly got back to my senses
