Happy Gwanny here
Fantastic!

I had my parents, brothers family, sisters family over in 2011, Christmas lunch totalled 17 including my OH side. This year no Papa but mum and my brothers family will be across. Not 17 but 12, one might say a sucker for punishment!
Manic kids everywhere...

Flipping heck- you catch me every time BM- was tooooo excited at the news. We bought the house Oct 2007- when we had the family over for Xmas on borrowed bit of furniture, banana boxes, folding and airbeds, etc... and we moved in March 2009.

I wasn't trying to catch you out at all. I was really pleased for to be all together for Christmas after so long and I still am. 7 years is still a really long time and I can understand your excitement, we were just the same a couple of years ago when the two 'big' boys and their OHs plus granddaughter came over for Christmas.

No, they are okey) and I need it now as it seems that i'll be packing boxes and leaving Switzerland around holidays and won't be able to enjoy them fully. So I'd rather start earlier this year))

Met the guy in charge of the library at the Ecole hôtelière of Lausanne.

He accepted to be the expert I need and to help me during my formation, which is absolutely great.

Re: I smiled because...

Last week I bought some proper brown sugar from a lovely EF member. I am now sitting here with a tall glass of milk and a plate of fresh-from-the-oven chocolate chip cookies. Perfect cure for this crap weather!

Re: I smiled because...

I'm happy because I've accepted the loss of many family members over the last decade. I'm able to move on and cherish what I have and look forward to the new and different festive season.

Re: I smiled because...

That's is the hardest, isn't it? Lost both my parents, one just before, and one just after we moved here- and 2 brothers to really stupid circumstances (over which I had no control)- but coming to term with this too.

Hugs and Joyeux Noël to you and yours too.

Re: I smiled because...

I smiled just now stumbling across this positive thread. There IS a lot of negativity here, even when its necessary to let out ones frustrations. Uprooting ones self and moving to a new country is a courageous step and not for sissies. So many issues come up which need to be settled, shit happens as we say, situations arise that we just never anticipated. So its important to find solutions. But, all said and done, the reason I came to CH was reminded to me on New Years Day....

I decided to move to Switzerland after my divorce and being a nurse I knew I could get a job with better pay here. (I worked the last 24 years as an American working in Germany, a looooong story worthy of its own thread).
In any case, my first three months here were hell. I was shell shocked for varying reasons (another possible thread), and have finally come down to earth with both feet on the ground the last two months really. The town where I live is the right one, my first job was a nightmare and I received confirmation of a second new job two days before Christmas, so things are looking up.

New Years Day I walked up the mountain near my town. It was a thousand meter hike in fluffly snow, blue skies mixed with fog, quiet and stillness.
I was alone. I am pretty much alone here...no family, no pets...just me myself and I. I am not unhappy, this has all been my choice. In any case, I reached a point about 800 meters up and stopped and listened. The quiet blew me away. It all came back to me, the whys of leaving my old life and the reasons for coming to this part of the world. It all came full circle and I smiled with this innate "knowing" that my hard and unique decision to uproot myself was well worth it.
I smiled in knowing I never gave up, even though I had many moments when I wanted to.
I smiled in knowing that I am not alone, there are so many of us gypsie souls wanting to explore and experience the world, its just so vast, beautiful and endless.
I smiled in remembering to live for the moment and to let all those negative frustratons that accompany all of us here, well, to just let them come and go. There is nothing we can do about them but deal with them one after the other. You don't get something for nothing afterall.
Just never give up, it IS worth it. My move has been worth it.

I know this turned into a self rambling piece but hey it just flowed and I will subit it and hope it left someone with a smile of self recognition this day.

Gruss
Shelly55
