Heavy stuff first to go to the bottom, Squashables last.
Which begs the question:

Are all Swiss useless at packing a shopping bag, or is my wife unique?

Re: Migros and Coop are cheating me again!

i never check my receipt, therefore i never get cheated

i also never collect points or supercards or whatever.

makes no sense to me to worry about incidentally losing (or gaining?) a couple of francs at the supermarket and then e.g. happily/forcibly spent 50 chf in some crappy restaurant.

like trying to save water by tightening a dripping faucet while another faucet is on full blast. penny wise, pound foolish.

simply watch carefully as they scan it. If it beeps twice then its been scanned twice. You have to at least be awake when shopping and not off on some dream!

Hi guys, just wanted to share a situation with you. Yesterday in Migros on Limmatplatz buying groceries. Payed, came home checked the bill and AGAIN seller charged me 2 X Kinder Bueno 10 Packs even I bought just one package.
Same situation happened to me few days ago when I bought fresh salmon in Coop which was 50 % off and she charged me full price. I bought 2 Pieces and on one she put the reduced price and on the second one she did not.
I wanted to leave it after first situation but now I am really pissed off. There was really not so many people, she could have done her job easy and correctly.
For the salmon I have proof but of course for 2 payed packages instead one what should I do?
Should I every time stand there after buying groceries and checking if she did her job well.
Of course this situations happened couple of times but I was never reacting because it was small amount and many time of course I was not even checking the receipt.

A friend of mine shared with me that he had same problem couple of times. You maybe as well?
Should I contact their Kundendienst?

Which begs the question - why do all supermarkets put the fruit and veg first! Particularly with the self-scan options it naturally puts them at the bottom of the bag
Nothing keeps you from organizing your cart's contents as needed
Preferably keeping in mind whether you'll stand in front or behind the cart when by the belt

Cold stuff together - ideally "building blocks" first (those items which stack well and can hold other things on top - eggs and yogurts do well here. Smoked salmon or cooked meats can be slid down the side of a bag once the basic structure is in place. Always helpful to my 2 wedges of cheese as these can then be put on top of each other to create a flat surface for something to go on top.

Tins on the bottom layer of a bag - ideally 4 in a bag - 1 in each corner.
Are you my husband's long lost twin?

I use that Passabene or Subito whenever i went shopping in Coop or Migros.
This might be your solution too

I was specifically talking about the self-scan you do on the way around.

So I line up the bags in the trolley and put stuff in, no need to do anything at the till - except all the soft stuff comes first in the store, and I have to balance it somewhere else until I've got past the milk section. Or re-arrange the bags half-way through.

Supermarkets do that from a marketing perspective. When customers arrive in a shop and the first thing they see is an overload of fresh fruits and vegetables, it instantly creates a happy and good feeling.

I remember that it was a topic during marketing classes at university but I can't find anything back on it when I Google it.

Nice idea - my first thoughts are inevitably
  • so they still put the soft stuff first
  • call those fresh strawberries
  • nice try hiding the gone off peppers in the bags of three
  • why don't you drop those apples from even higher up when you're filling the shelf, or practice juggling them a bit

Did we attend the same class?

I vaguely remember something about the most needed items being at the "end" of a tour through a shop (close to the tills), so that one needs to trek through the whole shop to get to the essentials. Sometimes shops smell like fresh bread in the weirdest places - this supposedly makes customers buy (more) stuff.

No and no. The correct question would have been:

Where did I hear that? I personally find it annoying to meticulously pack a bag while there is a big queue behind and the cashier is scanning every item so fast and everyone has to move fast...at least I don't put the eggs at the bottom.

Very good question. The only place I know that doesn't do that is the Coop Megastore in Wankdorf, Bern. There fruits and vegetables are right before the checkout counters. I never thought of it but that probably is one reason me and the oh do most of our shopping there, even if it is on the opposite end of town.

Maybe go to Denner instead. They are always really kind and helpful in the shop, moreover never made a mistake like that. That`s really not nice!

You should check your receipt before leaving the store.
It just happens. Go to the customer service and tell them what was wrong.

Re: Migros and Coop are cheating me again!

I detest the Passabene/Subito toys. I am batty enough without having to remember to scan everything then get accused of shop lifting. I would rather stand in a queue of 3 other batties than try to find my glasses, walk around beeping & then sweat through the check out zone scared I look like a drug smuggler.

Re: Migros and Coop are cheating me again!

I understand even if it was a small item and if you are in a foreign country you can get stressed. I was reading the replies , I also made a thread here and the way people comment sometimes is just plain mean without trying to help.

Don't take what happened to you personally. I think the self check out is pretty easy if you are a careful person but you don't want to deal with going through your list. As someone else said, you can also add everything up before you get to the cashier and these days it is easy to be done on your phone.

Mistakes happen and don't get stressed over it
