Cost of living for a family of 4

Hi All,

I'm new here just wanted to say hi.

We are going for a job in geneva and don't know what kind of salary will be offered. We are a family of four with 4 and 8 year old. What is the minimum amout we would need to live a modest lifestyle with a bit extra for saving. We probably would live outside geneva but would like to live near a good school for the kids. We don't life a lavish lifestyle but would want to go back to the UK twice a year and have a family holiday.

How much do you think we would need to put aside to actually relocate.

Thanks in advance its all a bit of a minefield.

Also are there any companies or there that can help you work this stuff out that doesn't cost a fortune?

Have you done a search on the forum for the many cost of living threads that have already been started and contributed to?

Without knowing a bit more about your circumstances the answer is going to be of the 'How long is a bit of String' variety.

What kind of a job, where in Geneva is the company/bank/office based, is it a local contract or a company transfer from abroad with simply oddles of financial help with the move?

Geneva is expensive, housing is generally in short supply and it's not going to be a question of simply deciding that you'll be living outside the city 'near a good school'.
If you're staying for a while and are putting them into the state system they'll go to the nearest school, you really don't get to chose. State schools are pretty good by the way and in Geneva they start at four.
If you can afford a private one then living near to the one where you've managed to get places is also not always as easy as it sounds.

Popping back to the UK is easy, Easyjet flights from Geneva go to various London airports several times a day, at least once a day to Manchester and (I think) a few other major airports. But school term times are strictly adhered to, you won't get away with taking the children out of school for any extra days without a good excuse; and a family holiday is not an acceptable reason.

Ask at any upcoming interview if relocation services are going to be offered as part of the package (help with finding long-term accommodation, school fees if you're going private, heath insurance contributions, etc.).
Be aware that these 'perks' will be taxable as they're considered part of your salary, and are often refundable to the company if you leave within a certain time frame.

Do not sign anything to do with a work contract, accommodation, insurances, etc. without getting either an official, written translation or at the very least all of your questions answered in writing.

There are private relocation companies, but they won't be cheap; nothing here is!
I'm sure there are loads of threads on this subject already on forum that will answer many of your general questions.... Longbyt has already linked to a recent one. You could try putting a few key words into the Search engine and see what you can find that way.

I'm told there's a lot of useful information in the 'Stickies' but must admit I've no idea how to find them. Perhaps a Mod could help here?

Also; I'd suggest you also try joining this forum; http://www.glocals.com/geneva/
Although EF is truly wonderful for a lot of things there are very few of us Geneva based members here, sadly most of them live in the germanic part!

Stickies? In each subforum the Stickies remain at the top of the list of posts (just under the paid-for Ads).
Forum > Dailly Life > Sticky with Links to other Threads, Internet Sites, Helpful Tips

Several years back there were long lists of 'stickies' at the top of some sub-forums. When I was moderating, I bundled links to many of them into a couple of new sticky threads with titles which showed roughly which information might be found there. . In those days 'Forum Legends' and other 'oldies' repeatedly pointed new members asking FAQs to the stickies. However, the 'Oldies' left the forum and this habit died out. Hardly anyone mentions them these days. Probably few members even notice them. Pity really. There is such a wealth of information in them - long lists of housing sites in the Housing section for example.
Many of the sticky threads are open so one can simply add posts to them. I still link threads or other information into them from time to time. At least I know where to find it if someone asks again.

On my computer the list stops here; English Forum Switzerland > Living in Switzerland > Daily life > Cost of living for a family of 4

No stickies, and no paid-for ads!
I've looked all over the display on my screen and can't find them, but I useless when it comes to computers.
Had rather hoped there'd be a link in one of the 'drop-down' things along the top, Quickies or Forum perhaps? So that might be a suggestion for whoever's in charge of the layout as where they are might depend on your set up or server.
I know they used to be obvious, and it's a great shame as they are a useful tool for newbies.

Eventually found this one,;http://www.englishforum.ch/daily-lif...f-library.html
and that by really digging inside the Daily Life listings. It's one of yours annd although the last post dates from 2012 is full of useful information.

Anyway, thanks for answering!

Re: Cost of living for a family of 4

Weird.
There are, in fact, as you say, no Ads in the Daily Life section at the moment, but that thread you quoted is at very the top of the list of threads on my screen, straight above this thread at the moment...weird. Oddly enough, when I tried to link it into this, it didn't work either. Maybe the title is too long or something. I'll ask Mod to shorten the title and see if that makes any difference.

Re: Cost of living for a family of 4

Going back to the UK is really very cheap, either by car or EasyJet- but the key is to book VERY early. Flights to UK from Geneva for Christmas are already astronomical, even with EJ- and so is the Tunnel- btw you can go by train too- great fun and so easy- again book 90 days in advance for best fares (which go up and up like EJ).

Family holidays- well you'd be surrounded by France and Italy - and you can get to Liguria or Côte d'Azur in half a day. And lots of cheap flights to so many destinations.

You could of course choose to live in FRance, very nearby- or further up in the Jura, the further you get from the Lake the better value, on both sides of the border.

A sticky is just another word for a thread that stays at the top of the forum list, you have them on your view too.

Re: Cost of living for a family of 4

Thanks everyone. Those links have helped and just to let you know I couldn't see the sticky either. I appreciate the replies as I can see this is an age old question on here. But it's the million dollar question I guess as it's a massive decision to take, especially with kids in tow.

Looking around I was also thinking between 110-120k Swiss francs would be about right.

I'm going to keep checking out the links and snoop around the forum. Thanks so much.

Having seen what various browsers make of the same Home Page I would NEVER, EVER tell anyone what THEY can see on THEIR screen!

I appreciate that, but then our levels and experience of IT literacy may potentially be a bit different.
