Lotto/Euro millions

On the news this morning is that someone in Kanton Bern has won Srf.10,000,000 on Swiss Lotto. Otherwise no-one has mentioned that on Friday night's Euromillions, someone, somewhere, has won the equal of Sfr.177,000,000.

... which means that everyone else who played and didn't win chucked twice as much (or whatever the ratio is) away.

Bern has, AFAIK, the best tax-rate for lotto-wins.
Everything else is worse, tax-wise in Bern, but they win for lotto-winners...

seems like a high-risk tax planning measure then.

People chuck money away on all kinds of stupid things. CHF3 every once in a while isn't terrible. You only need to win the jackpot once! Some people will waste 17F a week going to the movies?!? What's up with that? :eeks:

Since when was seeing an awesome movie on the big screen a waste of money?

I do agree with your sentiments regarding playing the lottery though, I also enjoy the occasional flutter, it's nice to fantasise for that briefest of moments that you may be able to buy your own mountain base complete with frikken laser-equipped sharks.

agree with Richdog. I shell out 9chf everytime the EM pot goes beyond 50M and enjoy daydreaming for a few days . To prolong my ecstasy, I refuse to see the results until one day it just hits me in the face .. or I read it from EF

Re: Lotto/Euro millions

For most winners, it's the beginning of a roller-coaster ride to the bottom.

I forgot to play this week, but played the other week (and didn't win).
I'll have to check the numbers nevertheless, to see if I had won. Then, I'd have to change numbers. No point in playing numbers that were already drawn ;-)

Rather better to play EuroMillions in the UK & have zero tax liability, so a +50% net payout.

Since we've had bit torrent

Seriously though, with the advent of HD TVs in various gigantic sizes and good AV systems, a visit to the cinema just becomes an exercise in having to put up with annoying people munching next to you, there's no bloody pause button when you need the toilet, and you can't have a cooler box full of beer with you. It's just bloody inconvienient.

Nah, cinemas are dead - nobody needs them anymore.

I am a huge Netflix and "alternatively sourced" movie buff, but in my eyes there is still something magical about watching a movie on a screen the size of a house that a 55" TV, or even a home projector, can't replicate.

Winning in EM is even better. Now TBH I'm not sure if this still applies, but let's assume it does:

Lottery gains won abroad aren't taxable until you import the monies.

So leave the 177mln where you won them, deregister here and move abroad, return after a few years and enjoy the full amount. The tax savings amount to around 20mln annual after-tax income; not bad at all even if you have 100mln already. In most cases you can still legally stay in CH for up to 3 months every calendar year so you can keep in touch with friends and family.

It won't work if you bought the ticket in CH. Any payouts above 50 CHF have 35% withholding tax deducted.

Re: Lotto/Euro millions

I don't know which would be worse:
Informing family or informing the local tax-office?
I'm in a small village and I don't think they could keep it a secret.
Especially, as it would be huge tax-windfall and everybody and his dog would start the guessing game...
The family-side ... I'd have to redistribute some of it.
But just how much? And to whom?
And if that isn't enough, I'm not sure some of my family could actually handle a non-trivial amount of money.

"The smartest move is not to play".

Correct if the payout is by an organization that is subject to swiss laws, which is likely to apply if payout is in CHF.

With EM however the payout is in Euros by a foreign lottery organisation that is not subject to swiss laws.

Wouldn't you agree that a, say, american lottery organization will probably give a chit about swiss tax laws? So if they paid the prize into an american account wouldn't they be highly unlikely to apply 35% swiss withholding tax?

Edit:
Searching quickyl shows that taxability has changed, all lottery as well as gains in foreign casinos are taxed as income, while winnings in swiss casinos are tax free. According to a 10-year old article in K-Tip (i.e. not necessarily true any longer) lottery gains are tax free in Basel-Stadt both on kantonal and Gemeinde level.

No point in playing numbers that were already drawn ;-)
Except that, even after being drawn once, they have exactly the same probability of being drawn in the next round as any other set of numbers. ;-)

(not that that the above logic actually affects my own manic-compulsive purchasing of lottery tickets every time they run that "minimum 100 million" special - I start trying to rationalise my number selection as soon as I see that poster, knowing that this time, these numbers are going to win because blah blah blah)

I remember seeing a "study" years ago that concluded that the totally non-random lottery selections "1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6" (or however many numbers you need to select) and similarly, counting down from the last number available, and the winning combination from the last draw, are the three worst possible combinations to choose for your Lotto entry. The reason isn't that they're less likely to win -- of course, all number combinations have statistically equal chances of winning -- but that many, many people choose those combinations. So if one of those combinations were to come up, there would be a large pool of winners divvying up the prize and the individual payouts could run into the low thousands for a multi-million jackpot!
