How should one pronounce 'Coop'?

Been unsure about this for a while. How do the Swiss pronounce it?

Would it sound 'Kup' written the German way?

How about in English?

Thanks!

Re: How should one pronounce 'Coop'?

Which Swiss? The ones in Zurich perhaps (as per your location?)-
here the local Swiss saw 'co-op' as in co-op(ting) someone on to the Board.

Re: How should one pronounce 'Coop'?

In English I would say "co-op", 2 syllables, just because to me a coop is a chicken coop . I believe the Swiss around here say "Caupe" rhyming like "Taupe" with a long "o" sound as in "toe"

The Swiss around here say cop ( like the slang for policeman in English) but we're in the French speaking part.

Re: How should one pronounce 'Coop'?

Easier than attempting to describe it here: go into your local one and browse for about three minutes (if even that long.) The slogan "Coop - für mich und dich" is repeated incessantly over the store PA system.

Co-op... not quite two syllables, but definiitely drawn out longer than "Cope". IIRC in Basel they say "Cope". Like most things, it varies from Kanton to Kanton (or even Village to Village).

All 3 ways are used in fact 'la cop', 'la copé' (full name was coopération) ou 'la co-op'

In English it's shortened from the Co Operative, so it's amusing when its pronounced 'KOOP'in CHD.

I've no doubt that they are but all the Swiss I know who live in my area (young and old alike) say la cop.

We find that most English speaking people pronounce it like 'Cope'.

Re: How should one pronounce 'Coop'?

People say 'còp' (with a short o as in 'hola' in spanish, not as in toe) in Fribourg. I noticed Swiss Germans call it 'coop' (with a long o, as in toe).
One syllable, not as in "co-op" (cooperative in English).

French speakers always add the definite article "la", e.g. "Je vais à la Migros", "La Coop ouvre à 9 heures." or "le" as in "Aller au Denner" and "Aller au Lidl".

Say "le magasin XYZ" if you can't remember which article to use. Plus if you mispronounce "Coop" people can still understand you

It made me laugh last week on the bus when a non-Swiss lady got on and asked the driver whether the bus went anywhere near "Migros" with a very audible 's".

You should have seen the head shaking and tutting and the muttering of "isch Migro" from the other passengers already on the bus.

I was quite glad the bus did go near Migros otherwise I'd hate to think what would have happened if she had then asked whether it went near "Co---op" rather than "Coop".
