Getting the most of the SBB Day pass - heading to Zermatt/Gornergat - Open New Years?

Hi all,

I scored one of the 69 CHF SBB all-day passes for two people deal that was being offered via Die Post and keen to get the most out of it. After deliberating which trains to get - what I'd like to do is go from Zurich to Zermatt/Gornergrat and on the way back via Interlaken. I'm pretty sure the all-day pass will work on this train?

My question is:
- Will anything be open new years day? The weather seems to be better tomorrow (instead of Saturday) and I want a clear photo of the Matterhorn!

- any tips/recommendations from anyone - we won't be skiing, rather, touring the villiage/town and looking for some good food

Thanks in advance!

According to this map:

http://www.sbb.ch/content/dam/sbb/de...albtax-abo.pdf

You will need a Half Price Ticket from Zermatt to the Gornergrat and return
Your GA does include this route.

Everything will be open... it's crazy busy at the moment.

If you are going up to Gornergrat, you could eat up there, or stop at Riffelalp on the way down and eat at Al Bosco, there. However, everywhere is busy, so I'd make a lunch reservation.

Thanks all for the responses. I'm wondering if you can actually have a clear photo of the Matterhorn from Zermatt or do you need to head up to Gornergat to see it. I'd like to really see the Matterhorn clearly with an amazing photo...debating if the train is worth the it to head up or spend the time in Zermatt?

You can photograph it from town no problem. From gornergrat you get a different view.... Clouds permitting of course!

You'll get a decent view from Zermatt, weather depending. This is a photo I took some 10 mins walk from the centre (was actually out of my room window that weekend )

Have a good trip!
