Dryathlon - the new sponsorship craze

......currently hitting the UK.

Anyone been duped into sponsoring someone with little willpower?
Anyone doing a Dryathlon?
Anyone giving up entirely - and doing the 12 steps?

I'm not entirely convinced by this "purge your drinking sins in January" idea - I suspect many of whom that complete it will greet February 1st with a cheer - 12 pints of lager, 4 tequilas, 8 Jagers and stinking hangover.

Re: Dryathlon - the new sponsorship craze

I'd never do it myself, but a well known professional busker in the U.K. is going dry for all of 2015 (Edit: 2016) for charity. That would take some doing. I met Jonny several years ago through a mutual friend and know he likes a pint, so it's a real challenge. Hopefully, the recent media coverage he's been getting will help him raise a decent amount...

I'm not planning to drink alcohol in January but it's got nothing to do with the above which I have never heard of until you posted it here.

But I wanted to see if I had a problems with not drinking for a while (none so far) and I wanted to see how it made me feel.

I wasn't a big drinker anyway.

I've done other things before like eat burgers and other fast food for a week before to see what would happen.

Re: Dryathlon - the new sponsorship craze

My husband couldn't drink over Christmas because of medication he was taking, so I decided to join him.
We actually found it easy, in fact it was rather nice having a sober husband for two weeks, no arguments or silly falling outs!

I went dry 1st, 2nd & 3rd of January .. I should have collected sponsorship for this major achievement.

The welcoming smile of the Duty Free shop assistant yesterday was just too much for me, and Mr Smirnoff also smiled!!

It's amazing how quickly booze evaporates once you open the bottle....

Re: Dryathlon - the new sponsorship craze

I quit having scotch on my corn flakes years ago - something about mixing grains not being healthy first thing

I have done a dry month in the past - usually ahead of a big race. Although the night before I'll have a glass or 2 of red wine - relaxes me and means I can sleep without worrying I haven't packed x, y or z in my kit bag!

I have no intention on having a dry January but I will cut down from my December intake

I've been dry all month.

In fact, I've only pissed myself twice since Christmas.

Re: Dryathlon - the new sponsorship craze

It's "hitting" the UK because its full of immature half-wits who never grow up out of thinking that in order to enjoy a drink you need to get drunk.

This doesn't raise any interest here - outside of expat circles - as there just isn't the drink till you're drunk and then drink some more culture here.
