I knew a woman in the UK who would take a knife to the supermarket and trim off the stalks of broccoli before weighing them ...
Some supermarkets in Germany provide a bin and a knife to do exactly this.

Its better to buy broccoli with the shortest stalks if you look through them you can easily find

You do know broccoli stalks (& leaves) are edible? I always use them. Just cut them into fat sticks & throw them in to what you're cooking. It's one of those "it has to look a specified way to sell" type things that cunsumers are brainwashed with.
Got to be a gardener to know otherwise & stop wasting so much.

Do not forget: ''up to a third of the people in Switzerland have mental problems'', according to Swiss Health Observatory (2012).
I have seen many strange behaving people in the past 2 years at the restaurant where I used to work.
Even today we can find many psychiatric hospitals in Switzerland, so
don't be surprised when you see somebody eating/stealing chicken nuggets in Coop or Migros ''restaurants''.

One of the things I strongly recall from my first years in Zurich in 1960/61 is the number of people then, who, in public, in trams, trains and on the streets showed some sort of mental disorder. At that time this behaviour was put down to inbreeding, the valleys and mountain communities being so solitary. I don't notice it these days.

I was only recently taught that the younger leaves of the artichoke plant taste just as good as good as the fruit, and furthermore, you can harvest them whenever you need them whereas the fruit (which is actually the flower) has a very narrow window between being unripe and being overripe - which as a hobby gardener you miss most of the time.

Amazing the stuff commerce comes up with to encourage waste.

I used to witness this often at our large Tesco in the UK- often mums with young kids, eating their way round the store, then paying for a few items at the till.

Must say I was surprised when we saw a young guy doing the same at the Coop in Neuchâtel. Was going to say something- but then thought better of it.
What were you going to say? Just curious like.

You do realize that in the end you (and we all) are paying for it?

In this specific case I´d actually be happy to
