Real Japanese restaurant

Hello,

After living 8 years in Japan I will be soon moving to Lausanne and I was wondering if in the area there are any "real" Japanese restaurants.
By "real" I mean with Japanese chefs and preparing genuine Japanese food, not European norimaki (rolled sushi) full of sauces. I have seen multiples websites but they look all very european style.

Thank you very much for your time.

By the way, 日本人いらっしゃいますか? (any japanese in this forum?)

Re: Real Japanese restaurant

Hi there...if you do find one please let us know. I haven't yet found a genuine Japanese restaurant (unless you want to pay through the roof). I can recommend the Nishi Japan Shop in Zurich for a spot of grocery shopping. It's at Schaffhauserstrasse 120.

Thank you very much for your kind replies.
I hope that also in Lausanne or Genève there is some authentic Japanese restaurant as I will move in that area.

Re: Real Japanese restaurant

I spent 5 years in Tokyo during my 'Asian tour' and for what it's worth would recommend the Sushi Zen in the Grand Palace Hotel in central Lausanne. The chefs are Japanese and the style hasn't been compromised too much to suit the European style of sushi.

Even by Japanese standards it is very expensive, but so is everywhere else in town and mostly rubbish, so it's a question of finding what you want and taking the pain. In mitigation, it should also be borne in mind that it's a very long way to the nearest fishing port!

Myo is also pretty good....more Izakaya style.

Can't help you with Geneva.

Enjoy your time

Re: Real Japanese restaurant

Once again thank you very much for your kind information.

After having read several threads about Switzerland I start to feel that I will never go to eat out anymore. I hope among so many bad restaurants it is still possible to find some good ones.
France and Italy are not too far away from Lausanne, therefore I do hope to find at least some authentic Italian and French restaurants.

Nonsense! There are plenty of good restaurants here, just not Japanese ones. Expand your food/taste experience and try new dishes. That's part of the adventure of living in a new country.

Re: Real Japanese restaurant

Thank you for your kind reply.
I'm a very opened person in ready to try whatever type of dish. Actually in my previous company I have been lucky enough to travel everywhere and eat all type of food.

You reassured me, reading the forum seemed that restaurants were all bad and expensive, also my future colleagues told me same thing.

I really do hope you are right as I love eating multi-ethnic food.

As I was told by a Swiss person on this forum recently, food tastes are subjective so not all views are the same.

I think the restaurant food here is shockingly bad but there are some good restaurants but they are few and far between.

Re: Real Japanese restaurant

Pretty much - if I want to eat well in CH, I have to cook it myself. Which is not a bad thing at the end of the day, but makes me run out of limited time resources. One thing about CH, though, it is a great place to get resources for eating well but eat well when one travels and keep the time in CH cooking your own stuff and get creative. In terms of improving quality of life - I like it, it teaches kids to self invest in a nice way, too. Not just pay for services done for them.

This is more what I usually hear about food in Switzerland...I'll have to start searching for those rare pearls.

I don't know about Lausane but there is this one in Zurich. It's owned by some Japanese people and it is authentic. You need to make a booking though. Waiting list for the weekend can be a bit long. The address is Neufrankengasse 25, 8004 Zürich.

Re: Real Japanese restaurant

Hiya ilcontegis, there is a place in Lausanne called Uchitomi, it is a grocery shop and food caterer owned and run by Japanese, there is also one in Geneva.

When you arrive in Lausanne, make a start there, they will also be the best people to ask regarding any real Japanese restaurants.

Re: Real Japanese restaurant

I would like to recommend Uchitomi too in Geneva and Lausanne, as Rachel says they sell food for you to prepare at home and also sell sushi and other produce for takeaway. It's good, not exquisite, but the best I've found so far.

There are more and more ramen bars in Geneva and Lausanne but I wonder if they're more fashionable than authentic. I'd love to hear recommendations from others as they're promising given the recent big temperature drop.

Also over in France there is Satsuki in Lyon, a shop selling all sorts of produce to order in case you want ingredients for your cooking, they have a website and ship to Switzerland.

Re: Real Japanese restaurant

I used to live and work in Japan so am very aware of what excellent Japanese food tastes like!
This place might not look like anything from the outside, but believe me, it is THE best Japanese restaurant I have eaten at not only in Switzerland but in the whole of Europe. Honestly. No I don't work for them, nor am I related to the owners. The restaurant is close to Neuchatel.

Re: Real Japanese restaurant

Hello, I don't know you are still following your sled, but I leave my suggestions.

I'm Japanese and living here Switzerland long time now, Japanese food has been improved a lot recently, but it's still Europe style or Asian mixed style are standard as "Japanese Food". No way! There are not enough Japanese people, and no sea(means not enough fresh fish!) in Switzerland! Even Japanese owner shop and restaurant need to meet the European taste for running it as a business. You must notice the foreign food restaurant in Japan, modified it for Japanese people.

I recommend "Kakinuma" in Geneva, and "le Kotch" in Lausanne, both owner are Japanese. "Sushizen" is not bad as a catering food. Otherwise cook at home! that I do everyday.
I like European food, but not everyday. My stomach refuses it, so no choice.
Let me know when you find a Japanese restaurant!
